The last time Michael asked her this, he thought Candy was Jioleek. Who did he suspect this time?
"There are regulations in the industry against revealing a hacker's real identity," Chloe said.
Michael found it amusing because Chloe was still trying to hide the truth. He pressed her against the nearby wall, holding the business card right before her. "Chloe, you are Jioleek. You were the one who turned down the Paramount Airlines project."
Realizing Michael truly knew the truth, Chloe decided there was no point in hiding anymore. She met his gaze. "Yes, it's me. So what? Are you planning to ruin me, expose my identity online?"
Michael's eyes showed a hint of hurt. "Is that really what you think of me? That I'm such a despicable person?"
Chloe pressed her lips. In truth, Michael wasn't despicable. At least he conducted his business above board. "Now that you know, what do you want? To get me to take on the Paramount Airlines project?"
Michael let out a self-mocking laugh. "Does it make you feel better to see me running around in circles because of you?"
Chloe thought she had misheard, thinking, "Feel better? There is nothing to gratified about this situation."
Michael continued, "I get it. You were upset because of Lucy, so you didn't tell me you were Jioleek. You wanted to get back at me. Well, are you happy now?"
Chloe couldn't understand how he connected these two issues. "Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't hide my identity to get back at you for Lucy. You're overthinking this."
Chloe pushed his chest forcefully, creating some distance between them. After smoothing out the wrinkles in her dress, she turned to head back to the banquet hall.
Michael didn't stop her. He had sought out Chloe primarily to confirm if she was indeed Jioleek. Now that he knew, he felt much more at ease.
As soon as Chloe returned inside, she spotted a male celebrity she had recently taken a liking to, standing off to the side, drinking.
With a smile, Chloe walked over to him. "Hello, are you Mr. Beckinsale? I'm Chloe. I've watched your TV shows before and really admire your acting..."
Before Chloe could finish, Calvin Beckinsale rolled his eyes at her. "Can't you autograph hunters give it a rest? I have my own private life, you know."
Chloe was stunned. Did he think she was just a crazed fan? "Mr. Beckinsale, I think you misunderstand, I'm not..."
Calvin cut her off again, "I don't have time to listen to your nonsense. If you don't want to be labeled as a stalker or an overzealous fan, you'd better leave. I'm very busy and not signing any autographs right now."
At that moment, Chloe's image of him shattered into pieces.
Candy, with a drink in hand, found Chloe. She saw Calvin talking to James not far away. She nudged Chloe's arm. "Weren't you interested in him? Go get his number!"
Chloe downed her orange juice in one go. "Forget it, I've suddenly lost interest."
Celebrities really did have their personas. Chloe had thought Calvin was genuinely friendly and highly skilled, just like the fans and media portrayed him. It turned out it was all just good marketing.
Candy was puzzled. "Since when did you get over someone so quickly?" It had only been a day, and Chloe was already not interested.
