At Michael's question, Lucy suddenly burst into laughter.
"What else would I be doing? I'm simply looking to strike a deal with you. If I remember correctly, Kranton Bank has been your partner for a while now. If the bank pulls out, don't you think Shawn Heavy Industries' cash flow might hit a snag?"
"Lucy, what's your endgame here? Are you so bent on making us suffer? What's your problem?"
Asher was stunned to hear that Shawn Heavy Industries was being threatened by Lucy.
Lucy gave him a scathing look. "And what makes you think you can talk to me like that? If it weren't for Michael, would the Cooper family even be surviving right now? If Shawn Heavy Industries goes under, the Cooper family will be the first to go down with it!"
Lucy said this because she knew full well that Asher's father had passed away years ago, leaving only his mother to care for him.
Though the Cooper family wasn't solely reliant on Asher's income from Shawn Heavy Industries, having a widow manage a whole company made it precarious.
Without Michael's support, the seasoned sharks in the industry would have devoured the Cooper family's company long ago.
The Cooper family's troubles were Asher's Achilles' heel and something he was fiercely protective of.
As he heard Lucy's taunts, his temper flared. "Lucy, cut the act. Just because you're clinging to some old man, don't think you can throw your weight around here."
Lucy, realizing the mask had come off, saw no reason to pretend any longer.
With a light, knowing smile, she said, "Sure, I'm with an old man, but don't forget, he's seventy-eight. He might drop dead any day now."
She thought to herself, "The chairman of Kranton Bank, whose wife passed away long ago, never remarried. He has only one son, who's in his forties and was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.
It's quite possible they'll both be gone soon.
When that happens, the money will be mine.
If I can charm this old man and maybe even marry him, when he dies, Kranton Bank will be all mine."
"Lucy, do you really think Abel doesn't know what you're scheming?" Michael's voice cut through her reverie.
"Even if he does, what of it? He's old; if I can offer him some warmth before he kicks the bucket, and he gives me the money I need, it's a win-win situation. What's the problem?"
Lucy thought, "Abel Lovato hasn't touched a woman in years, and at his age, he's probably lost interest.
I just need to endure a little longer, and all the wealth and luxury will be mine!"
With that, she stood up, walked over to Michael's desk, bracing herself with her hands, and leaned in close.
"Mr. Shawn, if you truly care about the bigger picture, you'll avoid crossing me at this juncture."
Finding a mark like Abel wasn't easy.
Lucy was even grateful for Michael's stubborn refusal to let her return to Shawn Heavy Industries. If not for that, she wouldn't have been so distracted that she ended up bumping into a car, which just happened to be Abel's.
