Chapter 0072
In that moment, Mia felt a faint anticipation for the evening to come.
“Alright,” Hunter responded, reaching out to tap her on the nose. “Go keep your grandmother company in her room. I’ll head back to the office.”
Mia wanted to tell him that her grandmother, whenever she was lucid, would often ask when her husband would come to visit. In three years of marriage, her grandmother had never once met Hunter in person.
After a long hesitation, Mia finally gathered the courage to say, “Hunter, would you…”
But before she could finish, his phone suddenly rang, interrupting her. She clearly saw the name “Jenna” on the screen. In that instant, every hope she had held in her heart was shattered.
This love triangle was destined to end in disappointment.
“You should lie down and rest. I’ll be there shortly,” Hunter said, his voice filled with urgency. Mia blinked with a subtle sadness in her beautiful eyes.
Then Hunter’s voice broke the silence. “Go be with your grandmother in her room. I have to swing by the law firm. Jenna’s having stomach pains and isn’t feeling well.” He seemed to sense her disapproval and added, “She just got pregnant. She’s anxious and emotional all the time, which is making her unwell. After the first trimester, it’ll settle.”
Mia stared at his face. His worry for Jenna was written all over it.
A wave of suffocating pain washed over her, but she managed to nod. “Go ahead. Drive safely.”
Just moments ago, Mia had almost told him that she was pregnant too, that she needed him to stay by her side. But in the end, she said nothing. If she mentioned it now, Hunter would probably accuse her of lying just to compete with Jenna.
It was better to stay silent.
Hunter cupped her face, leaning down. Mia turned her head away, and his lips brushed her cheek instead.
Hunter raised an eyebrow. “Mia, are you upset?”
There was an edge of annoyance in his voice. He had explained Jenna’s situation to her so why was she still unhappy?
Mia’s hands clenched unconsciously as she forced a faint smile. “I’m not upset. Go ahead, I’ll be waiting for you at dinner tonight.”
After all, she still needed his help with her grandmother’s medication. Her feelings didn’t matter.
Hunter studied her face, as though trying to read her thoughts.
Mia gently pushed him away, a faint smile on her lips. “Didn’t you say she was in pain? Go on, don’t just stand here looking at me.”
She masked her pain with a smile, It wasn’t the first time. She had learned to get used to it.
“Alright, I’ll be home early tonight,” he said, pressing a quick kiss to her forehead before he turned to leave.
