Kirk strode into SY Group’s headquarters in Easton.
There wasn’t a single person in sight.
After making sure that there was absolutely no one left there besides the two of them, Charles walked out and told him, “Sir, I’ve checked all the rooms. All the employees have left.”
“Where’s the parcel?”
Charles brought Kirk to the reception counter and said, “Here it is. This is the parcel you wanted.”
Kirk stared at the box, his gaze dark and piercing.
“Sir,” said Charles with his voice lowered.
“Does this box really contain a … bomb?”
Instead of answering, Kirk simply stared unblinkingly at the box. No one could ever be certain of how much what Finn said was true. It wouldn’t hurt to be extra careful.
“Are they here?”
“They’re waiting for your orders at the back door,” Charles whispered.
He didn’t have the guts to speak loudly at this crucial moment. Things would go awry if they were discovered.
“Let them come in,” ordered Kirk.
Charles nodded, headed to the back door, and led the men to the reception counter.
“Sir,” said all of them in unison upon seeing Kirk.
Kirk nodded at the box. “Open it up and see what’s inside.”
“Yes, sir,” came the men’s unanimous reply.
After putting on their equipment, they picked up their shields, approached the parcel gingerly, and opened it.
Several minutes later, they took the box out of its outer casing.

Charles‘ eyes turned as big as saucers when he saw it. It was, in fact, a bomb. “How did this even
get to Easton?”
Everyone else’s faces were equally gloomy. The men, who were actually bomb disposal technicians, then produced their tools to inspect the bomb. After quite some time, they stared at it
in confusion.
“What’s wrong?” Kirk asked.
“It doesn’t seem like a bomb now.”
“What do you mean ‘seem‘?” Charles was displeased.
“If it’s a bomb, it’s a bomb. There’s nothing in between.”
“It certainly looks like one, but we didn’t detect any explosive substances.”
“It’s fake, then?” Charles glanced at Kirk, and everyone else followed suit.
The head of the bomb disposal team looked troubled as he answered, “We can’t be sure until we take it apart.
“Sir?” Charles prompted Kirk as the latter considered the suggestion, scowling.
A moment later, he ordered, “Do it!”
“Yes, sir!” The team then started doing their job.
Standing aside, Kirk stared at the tiny black object surrounded by the bomb disposal technicians, his eyes dark like a bottomless pit.
There was something off about this, but he couldn’t tell what it was.
