Chapter 45 Burton's Reaction
Jacquelyn couldn't believe that Rejoyla would actually lose her temper. "What's there to criticize about someone like Elvis? He has outstanding character, comes from a prestigious family, and is someone you can be proud of. He's not some spoiled rich kid living off his family's wealth. What's there for you to be dissatisfied with? You should be grateful because he wants to be with you!"
"It's strange because he wants to be with me. Be honest with yourself. What do I have that made Elvis fall in love with me at first sight and immediately want to get engaged to me? And the Sterling family was eager to agree to the engagement, right? There must be a problem!"
However, Jacquelyn was ecstatic because of the great news and didn't listen to Rejoyla's analysis at all. "This matter has been settled. You don't have to care much about it. I will arrange the grandest engagement ceremony for you and let those snobbish people in the Sterling family know that my Joy is the luckiest. Humph, Ingrid and Hillary are the daughters of the Sterling family, but so what? It doesn't mean they'll have a better husband than you. Let's see if they still dare to give you attitude!"
Although Jacquelyn always advised Rejoyla to endure it, she was also very angry. She had long resented Nick's family because they made things difficult for Rejoyla again and again. Besides, she had become Mrs. Sterling, but they didn't respect her at all.
Rejoyla scratched her hair. Why couldn't she get through to Jacquelyn? Her focus was on Elvis, not the women in the Sterling family. Was Jacquelyn doing this on purpose?
Rejoyla was about to speak again when Jacquelyn grabbed her wrist and dragged her inside.
The living room was brightly lit, and the members of the Sterling family were all there. As soon as Rejoyla entered, she felt waves of resentment from Ingrid and Hillary. But that wasn't the main issue. The main issue was her engagement to Elvis. Rejoyla voiced her thoughts in front of Burton before Jacquelyn could speak. "Mr. Sterling, Mr. LimBurton and I just met. We're not even friends, let alone get engaged. I hope you can convey my gratitude to Mr. LimBurton, but we're not suitable for each other. I hope he can be with someone who loves him in the future. I won't waste his time!"
After Rejoyla finished speaking, she breathed a sigh of relief. The underlying hostility toward her dissipated. She secretly glanced at Jason, who was next to Burton. Rejoyla felt miserable. When other women were pursued by someone else, their boyfriends would be jealous and nervous, and treat them even better. But she had to take the initiative to reassure Jason, lest he would strangle her to death. Of course, she and Jason were not in a relationship. Forget it. She stopped thinking about it. Now the main issue was Elvis.
After Rejoyla said that, Ingrid was slightly surprised, and Hillary's reaction was even more direct. For the first time, she smiled at Rejoyla. "Miss Lynn, are you telling the truth or just playing hard to get?"
Humph, even if Rejoyla was playing hard to get, Hillary would give her no way out and force her to publicly admit that she wouldn't be with Elvis.
Rejoyla was eager for someone to ask. She immediately said, "Of course not. I swear I..."
"Alright, Jacquelyn, take Joy back. She's probably too happy after hearing the news and hasn't fully processed it yet. You can all leave now!"
Just as Rejoyla was about to swear, Burton suddenly interrupted her. Rejoyla frowned as Jacquelyn pulled her away. "Oh dear, Joy is just being shy. She's naturally thin-skinned. I'll explain everything to her!"
Jacquelyn dragged Rejoyla to the second floor and pushed her into her room, locking the door. "Rejoyla, are you trying to kill me? How could you say that in front of the Sterling family? Thank goodness Burton interrupted you, or you would have been embarrassed!"
"I was telling the truth. I don't like Elvis!"
"Enough, I don't want to hear it!" In Jacquelyn's opinion, it didn't matter whether Rejoyla liked Elvis or not. Elvis was the son of the LimBurton family, and that was enough. "I'm warning you, Rejoyla. Don't mess this up for me. Just wait for the engagement!"
Rejoyla pouted. Jacquelyn was too excited. Even if she died now, Jacquelyn would make sure she married into the LimBurton family and then die. That was why Rejoyla didn't tell Jacquelyn about her relationship with Jason. If Jacquelyn found out, Jacquelyn would do anything to let Jason be with her.
When Rejoyla fell silent, Jacquelyn thought it was because she had convinced Rejoyla. She talked excitedly about the upcoming engagement, and she would tell her friends the good news. How dare they laugh at her for marrying an old man behind her back! Could their sugar daddies marry their daughters into a family like the LimBurton family?
After Jacquelyn left, Joana popped her head in and asked, "Joy, what's going on? How did something so big happen when I was gone for just one day? Who is Elvis? Does Jason know about this? Oh, he has known about it? I mean, is he not against it?"
Rejoyla lay on the couch and rolled her eyes helplessly. "Didn't you hear that? I said I didn't agree, but no one listened to me!"
Joana was also in the living room at that time and knew that Rejoyla didn't want to get married. She poked Rejoyla's arm and asked, "Are you really unwilling? According to Mom, Elvis is the perfect option. What are you not satisfied with?"
