Pharaoh was looking at his phone, not glancing up as he assumed it was the nurse. With a touch of irritation, he spoke, “I made myself very clear earlier. This is a decision I should be able to make on my own. Do you still need to…”

When he finally looked up and saw Nina’s face, the rest of his words got stuck in his throat. His expression softened, showing genuine delight. “Nina, what brings you here today? Didn’t we agree you’d come tomorrow so Orion wouldn’t miss school?”

“They got out early today, so we stopped by on our way home,” Nina replied, walking toward his bedside.

Pharaoh’s smile faltered as he remembered the report sitting right there on his bedside table, the one with his late-stage liver cancer diagnosis. If Nina saw it, there would be no more hiding the truth.

Quickly, he folded the report and tucked it under his pillow. The speed of his action and the flash of anxiety on his face told Nina all she needed to know. Whatever was on that paper was clearly the secret he had been keeping.

The report must be related to his health.

“Grandpa!” Orion bounced over, pulling a sticker from his backpack and placing it beside Pharaoh. “I got a sticker today! I have one, Mom has one, and now you have one too.”
