“You can rest assured, we’ll speak to the doctor about the baby,” the kind stranger said. Only then did Winnie close her eyes, finally letting herself relax.
Meanwhile, Ben had been sitting alone in the dark for what felt like ages. He had a few drinks, but his mind was only growing sharper and colder with each passing moment.
*Knock, knock, knock!*
The sudden noise broke through the silence, echoing sharply in the stillness. His lips curled into a slight smirk. So, she had come after all.
But when he opened the door and saw who it was, the playful smile on his face vanished, replaced by an icy chill.
“Who are you?”
The delivery driver, dressed in his uniform, suddenly felt a shiver run down his spine. He cleared his throat nervously and held up a bag.
“Mr. Ben Lucas, right? This is your express delivery.”
Ben narrowed his eyes slightly, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face. “That woman really does have a bit of wit,” he muttered to himself.
Without saying a word, he took the bag and shut the door in one swift motion.
“There’s always another day,” he thought.
The delivery driver exhaled sharply, relieved to be away from the unsettling tension. He then hurried back downstairs.
……
Late at night, the emergency room bustled with activity, the chaos of nurses and doctors rushing in and out.
“Where are her family members? Does anyone know her family?” A nurse called out, glancing at the young couple who had brought Winnie in.
“We don’t know,” one of them said, shaking their head. “We found her on the street. She kept asking us to save her baby.”
The nurse frowned deeply. “Right now, we can only focus on saving her,” she said, feeling the weight of the situation. With no family in sight, they would have to involve the authorities.
Ignoring the curious stares from staff and patients in the hallway, she stormed out of the hospital.
She knew exactly where Charlie was. Jamie had taken everything from her, and now it was time to return the favor.
……
Winnie found an opportunity and quietly took Charlie from the hospital.
Charlie rubbed his sleepy eyes, confused but trusting. “Aunt Winnie, where’s Mommy?”
Winnie gripped the steering wheel tightly, staring straight ahead, saying nothing.
Charlie leaned over the back of the seat, his eyes fixed on her face. His voice, filled with concern, broke the silence.
“Aunt Winnie, what’s wrong? You look so tired. Did someone bully you? Tell me, and I will help you fight the bad guys!”
