Taking a deep breath, Winnie issued her final threat. “Well then, sorry to say, but I’ll be taking Charlie. Neither you nor Jamie will ever see him again in this lifetime.”
With that, she turned and made her way toward her car.
What she didn’t expect was for Ben to have stealthily approached. Suddenly, he grabbed her, restraining her movements.
Ben’s gaze was icy and dangerously sharp. “This time, you’re not going anywhere. Charlie stays, and you know exactly what kind of crime kidnapping a child is.”
Winnie bit her lip hard, trembling as she held back her emotions. “Are you really going to send me to prison?”
“That’s my specialty,” Ben replied, his tone unwavering. “But if you hand over Charlie, I might consider defending you in court.”
Winnie let out a bitter laugh, lowering her head. “You really are heartless. But I’m not saying a word.”
Just then, the distant roar of an engine broke the tense silence.
They turned to see a black car barreling toward them, kicking up a cloud of dust as it came to a sudden stop between them.
A tall figure stepped out, wearing a hooded sweatshirt. In his strong arms, he held Charlie, a knife pressed against Charlie’s delicate throat.
With a deep, menacing voice, the masked man issued his ultimatum. “Let Winnie go, or I’ll kill him.”
It was Charlie.
Winnie’s face went pale with shock. “What are you doing here?”
“I knew you’d mess it up,” the masked man replied, his voice low and cold.
