Jamie had her doubts.
Until she saw Winnie’s body with her own eyes, she wouldn’t believe her sister was truly gone. Her home was already in ruins, and Winnie was her only sibling.
“She’s not dead,” Ben said hoarsely. “Winnie ran away. Jamie, I can tell you exactly what happened with her pregnancy. I used her, yes, but I never laid a finger on her.”
He paused, his voice low but steady. “Even though I deceived her, I made sure she had everything she needed.”
The material support Ben provided to Winnie had all been used to improve Jamie’s life and pay for Charlie’s medical expenses. Winnie had genuinely loved Ben and dreamed of building a life with him. Even if she hadn’t come back yet, Jamie believed it was only a matter of time before she did.
And when Winnie returned to find Jamie, Ben, and Charlie living happily together as a family, what would she think? How could Jamie disregard Winnie’s feelings?
Besides, it had been four years since she and Ben had parted ways. They weren’t the same people anymore.
“Ben, we’ve been apart for too long,” Jamie said softly. “Let’s not dwell on the past. Your mom has already chosen a wonderful fiancée for you. You should be with Summer.”
Ben hadn’t expected this. First, Jamie had given him up for a million dollars. Now, she was giving him up again for Winnie.
Love?
Jamie’s love for him was weak. It was barely there, he thought.
“Jamie,” Ben said, his voice tinged with frustration, “what about Charlie? Wouldn’t he be happier and better off with me? I can provide him with the best care, education, and life. He’s still so young. Before, you had no choice. But now, what’s stopping you?”
Ben’s reddened eyes pierced Jamie’s heart.
Without hesitation, Ben picked up the phone and called Nash.
After hearing Ben’s request, Nash immediately offered a solution. “Nina’s father is currently undergoing treatment, so the medical team is abroad. But Nina’s friend has a hospital in Birkham. I can connect you with them.”
“Great, thank you,” Ben replied.
Two experts were better than one, and with more resources, the chances of success increased. His sole focus now was his son’s health.
What Ben didn’t realize was that Nash, hearing the urgency, assumed this was just about saving a child. He had no idea that Charlie was actually Ben’s son.
Before they ended the call, Nash added thoughtfully, “Ben, like Hunter once said, if you still care for her, don’t overthink it. Just go for it.”
