Ben let out a quiet sigh of relief. “You weren’t doing so well earlier, but you’re fine now.”
He had looked into Jamie’s condition extensively, and the advice was clear that she couldn’t handle too much emotional stress. For now, it was best to avoid telling her about the full extent of her issues.
Jamie didn’t suspect anything.
Her memories of what had just happened were hazy and disjointed, and Ben’s explanation that she was simply overexerted seemed plausible enough.
Charlie tugged at her hand. “Mom, are you really tired? You should go rest. I’m a big boy now and I don’t need you to stay with me all the time.”
Jamie couldn’t help but smile, pinching his chubby cheek. “Yes, you’re my little man, but I still worry about you.”
“I think you should rest too,” Ben added.
“I’m fine,” Jamie replied. “If this is about Winnie, I’ve already come to terms with it.”
“I’ve arranged for a nurse to help watch over Charlie. Take tomorrow off and come back the day after,” Ben suggested firmly.
Jamie frowned. “Since when do you get to decide that?”
Ever since Winnie’s death, everyone had been overly cautious around her. Jamie understood their concern, so she had been working hard to recover quickly. After a week of rest and care, she felt much better, so why didn’t Ben believe her?
Ben sighed. “Do you really think you’re in good shape right now? Go to the bathroom and look in the mirror.”
Jamie didn’t respond.
She had been staying up late every night, waking up early the next morning to visit Charlie, with barely enough time to rest. It was no wonder she looked so worn out.
Her exhaustion was written all over her face, with dark circles so prominent that even makeup struggled to hide them.
Even Charlie joined in, helping Ben convince her. Under their combined persuasion, Jamie quickly gave in.
Ben immediately found a reliable nurse to assist at the hospital. But for Jamie, having time off left her feeling aimless.
“I’ve made an appointment at a clinic. Come with me,” Ben said.
Ben, however, was called in for a conversation.
When he came out, his face was clouded with an unfamiliar darkness. Jamie had never seen him look so grim.
“Was it bad?” she asked, her voice betraying her unease. Even though she had prepared herself for the possibility, it was hard to accept the idea that she might have a mental health issue.
Ben forced a small smile, trying to reassure her. “It’s nothing serious. You just need rest.”
Jamie knew better than to press him further, realizing he wouldn’t say anything more.
The clinic had prescribed her some medication, which was packed in small, unlabeled pouches. It was likely a deliberate choice by Ben to keep her from identifying the pills.
But Jamie wasn’t naive.
Later, she snapped a picture of the medication and searched for it online. When the results came up, her hand trembled, and the pills nearly fell to the floor.
It was medication for bipolar disorder.
