Jamie stared at the pills in her hand, her emotions swirling. After a long pause, she quietly put them away, pretending she had never taken them out.
Ben had gone to great lengths, all for her benefit. She decided not to confront him about it.
The nurse Ben hired to look after Charlie was incredibly attentive, significantly easing Jamie’s stress. After a few visits to the hospital, Jamie felt reassured enough to focus more on her own recovery.
Ben arranged for Caleb to follow up on her condition. “Caleb isn’t busy these days. I asked him to check in on you,” Ben said casually.
Jamie didn’t comment, but Caleb had plenty to say.
“Not busy?” Caleb grumbled as he arrived. “Your dear Mr. Lucas dragged me out of the hospital to do this. I’m swamped, you know!”
After examining her, he made a few observations. “Your stomach’s a bit off. Have you been eating properly? Looks like you haven’t had much lately. You need to eat more.”
Jamie avoided his gaze, and for the first time in front of Ben, she looked visibly guilty.
Ben stared at her for a long moment before responding with a curt, “Anything else?”
“Nothing major. Just make sure she gets plenty of rest.” Caleb checked his watch, already eager to leave. “I’ve got surgeries lined up. Next time, don’t call me unless it’s an emergency.”
With that, he left in a hurry, likely rushing back to the hospital.
Jamie thought Ben might question her further, but instead, he called the helper over. “Has she been eating properly?”
The helper hesitated, casting a glance at Jamie. “Not really… Miss Lewis’s been eating very little. I’ve tried to encourage her, but she says she can’t eat.”
“It’s not her fault,” Jamie interjected, rubbing her temples. “I just don’t have much of an appetite these days. I’ll be fine soon.”
Since Winnie’s death, everyone had been watching her closely. Jamie was aware of their concern and had been working hard to recover, but the weight of recent events and the medication had sapped her appetite.
Ben studied her for a moment, his deep gaze unreadable. Finally, he instructed the helper, “Switch up the meals. Try different flavors. She needs to eat.”
“Of course,” Ben agreed. “Quiet places are fine. Didn’t Charlie mention wanting to go to an amusement park? We could rent it out for the day.”
“Rent the entire park?” Jamie blinked, her face twitching slightly at the suggestion.
Ben’s tone was calm and matter-of-fact, completely unfazed by the extravagance of his proposal.
If it weren’t for Ben, Jamie doubted she’d ever have the means or the nerve to consider something so over the top. But given Charlie’s condition, it was undoubtedly the best option.
Thinking of how much Charlie would light up at the surprise, Jamie didn’t hesitate for long.
“Alright, let’s do it tomorrow. I’ll let Charlie know.”
The next morning, she went to the hospital to pick up Charlie. Wanting to surprise him, she kept their destination a secret.
Charlie was bursting with energy as they drove, unable to contain his curiosity. “Mom, where are we going? Is Uncle Ben coming too?” he asked eagerly.
