Mike was rushing to finish his programming tasks. In a company as large as the York Corporation, the competition was fierce. Back in his previous job at a smaller company, he was a big shot. But here, there were over a dozen programmers with similar skills and ambitions.
To climb up the ladder, he had to stand out. Leaving his former employer with high hopes, he could not afford to slack off, pushing himself hard to meet deadlines. He barely had time for meals, hastily nibbling on a piece of bread to stave off hunger.
Just then, with a piece of bread in his hand, Mike felt a crowd gathering around him. He looked up and nearly jumped in surprise, almost dropping his bread. "Mr. York!"
Nash's imposing figure stood before him, exuding immense pressure. Mike immediately stood up. "Mr. York, is there something I can help you with?"
Nash scrutinized the young man before him, whose age was similar to Nina's. He asked in a subdued tone, "Are you Mike?"
"Yes," Mike replied, unsure why Nash had sought him out. He added nervously, "I... haven't done anything wrong, have I?" He had joined York Corporation with enthusiasm, and being dismissed now would be a devastating blow.
Nash remained silent, leading the way to the general manager's office. The manager urged Mike, "What are you waiting for? Go in."
"Right, right," Mike hurried into the office, feeling the weight of Nash's presence even in the confined space.
Though he had not interacted much with Nash, he knew enough about his character and demeanor to feel a palpable sense of pressure.
Nash sat casually on the sofa with his gaze fixed on Mike. "Do you know Nina?"
Mike replied, "I was Nina's college classmate. I know she's your personal secretary..."
