But she couldn't abandon that pregnant woman, which ultimately led to her uncle getting hurt too.
The man sighed, gently caressing her cheek, "It's okay, don't cry."
But the girl's tears streamed even harder.
Those thugs didn't want any part in this emotional scene. They tried to grab the girl, but the man kept a firm grip on her hand, afraid to let go.
He feared that once he let go, they would sell the girl.
"Uncle, let me go."
She was even pleading with him.
The thugs were getting impatient, fearing the police might show up any minute. So, one of them raised a baseball bat, ready to shatter the man's arm.
But just in the nick of time, Maja called out.
"How much do they owe you? I'll pay it for them."
She had finally come to her senses, slowly dragging her exhausted body forward.
When the men saw her face, their eyes lit up for a moment, but then they saw her overweight body and their expressions turned to disgust.
"You fat cow, what are you doing here? At a small clinic like this, how much money could you possibly have? Half a million dollars, can you even afford that?"
Maja had already lost her pregnancy, her belly was flat now, but her figure was still overweight.
She slowly walked up to the girl, gently patting her on the head.
"Half a million, huh? I'll pay it for them. You said yourself, selling her ten times wouldn't cover the debt. Might as well bet that I can pay it. My friend is on her way here. She can write you a cheque."
"What if you're lying to us, you fat cow? Did you secretly call the police?"
"If the police show up, you can take me hostage."
Her tone was indifferent as she looked at the middle-aged man clutching his bleeding head.
"Take your uncle to the clinic," she advised the girl, "have the doctor bandage him up."
But the girl was fixated on Maja's belly, which had just been round and protruding just a moment ago and was now suddenly flat.
But she didn't have time to ponder this, instead helping the injured man to his feet with bloodshot eyes.
Worried that Maja was just stalling, she whispered, "Run, Maja. These men are really ruthless. If you can't come up with the money, they might break your arms and legs."
Even at this point, she was still concerned about Maja, a woman she had only just met.
Maja felt a soft ache in her heart, "It's okay. I do have the money."
The girl looked surprised. Half a million dollars was an incredible sum to her family.
Looking at Maja's clothes, she didn't seem wealthy.
Just then, the man groaned in pain, causing the girl to quickly lead him into the clinic.

Is author playing with our emotions?...
Why are there no updates yet, Author. We've all been waitibg for quite a while now. Please, update soon, Author. Thanks....
Author, my thoughts on the book. When are You going to write on Cornelia and Omar Casson's romance? You made no mention, describing in detail how Maja and Uan's white wedding ceremony went. Also, you didn't write on Carol's baby delivery. What about Tyler's romance. Is there closure on Phelps Herrington being truly certified dead, so also his twin brother? Dylan's research institute "little girl", what became of her and Dylan's romance? Beck's blind dates, what were the results, is he married now, so also Dylan to his "little girl"? Why hasn't Ian's father- Steven come forward to meet Maja's parents as the in-laws meeting each other especially with his supposed past with Lillian; Maja's mother. I hope I won't remain curious for too long on the aforementioned issues, Author. Thanks for doing a good job on Zoey and Fitch's romance, though. Kudos....
