Dear Ex-wife Marry Me novel (Maja) novel Chapter 1479

No sooner had Maja left than Quentin flicked a piece of candy onto Patric's lap.

"Dope, this one's for you."

Patric, of course, couldn't tell if it was a gesture of kindness or malice. The poor guy was genuinely a dumb now.

He picked up the candy, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth.

Quentin perched himself on a rock and asked him.

"Is it sweet?"

"Sweet."

"Really?"

He'd never tasted such a thing before. For someone of his stature, the familiar tang of blood was far more common than the luxury of sweetness.

His stepfather once said that the cloying taste could numb the senses, sapping a person's will to fight.

As a kid, he'd stolen a piece of candy after an exhausting training session, lured in by its scent.

He thought it would be a fitting reward for his grueling efforts, but before he could swallow it, he was whipped twice.

"Quentin, you're such a letdown. Touch that stuff again, and I'll chop off one of your fingers."

That scared him stiff. He couldn't quite remember how old he was when that happened.

So in his memory, candy wasn't sweet. It tasted of two lashings.

It was bloody, painful, and bitter.

Now, watching Patric, who understood nothing of the world, Quentin felt a twinge of envy.

The man appeared to be in his late twenties yet could smile with such innocence.

He was satisfied with just a piece of candy.

What a waste of an extra decade of life.

Quentin lowered his lashes and pulled out his phone to contact his crew.

"Grab her, find out where the Jellyfish Seal is. Time to bring down the curtain on this act. Also, block K's people. Forbidden Island isn't their playground."

"Mr. Gellar, K sent a message. He wants to have a serious talk with you."
