Zoey's heart was pounding fiercely, her palms tingling.

It was only after she realized what she had done that she took a step back. Fitch lowered his lashes, his fingertips wiping away the trace of blood at the corner of his mouth.

"What's there to be afraid of? I'm not going to hurt you."

"Mr. Haskins is correct, but maybe deep down, I think you might hurt me?"

She had forgotten, but her body still remembered the slap he had given her at the Haskins' Thanksgiving dinner. Fitch stopped wiping his lip, falling silent. Zoey had no desire to engage with him further and found a chair to sit in. Fitch seemed frozen in place, her words striking him like a dagger, drawing blood.

She had become clever now, he thought. He tried to provoke her into remembering the past, and she hit back with even greater force. Zoey suddenly felt irritable, and just at that moment, her phone rang. It was Henry. She stood up and walked to the side to answer the call, not noticing Fitch putting on his wireless earbuds.

"Hello, Henry?"

"Zoey, I'm all set. Can I come over to your place? I'm on my way, and my folks are with me. At this hour, I bet your parents haven't left yet. We'll just pop by for half an hour."
