"You shouldn't always think about work. You're just a girl, you don't need to work so hard."
My mom knew that I was very serious about work, so she didn't doubt my excuse and looked at me with concern.
"I know. Mom, I will take care of myself. You don't have to worry about me."
I gave her a faint smile and felt a little guilty.
The operation was scheduled for the afternoon, so I spent the whole morning in the ward talking with my father. I felt like crying when I saw his greying hair.
"Hollie, what's going on between you and Vaughn? Why was the wedding suddenly cancelled?"
After chatting with my father for a while, my mother pulled me aside and began to ask about Vaughn.
Previously, I'd just called them to tell them that the wedding was cancelled, but I didn't tell them the specific reason because I didn't want them to be angry about it.
"Nothing. I just felt that we didn't really fit, so we cancelled the wedding."
Hearing Vaughn's name, my heart trembled slightly. I looked at my mother with a guilty look.
It was over between me and Vaughn, so I didn't want my parents to fret over me because of that jerk.
"You are lying to me. You're my daughter, I know you well. You've loved Vaughn for so many years, you wouldn't feel like that right before the wedding. Are you hiding something from me?"
My mom knew my personality. I always hid the bad news from them purposely, so she didn't believe my explanation.
She also knew how much I liked Vaughn before. I had been looking forward to our wedding. The sudden cancellation was not only suspicious to my parents, anyone who knew us would be suspicious too.
Under my mother's repeated questioning, I could only tell her that Vaughn cheated on me with Laney and even had a child with her.
"He's gone too far! How could he do this to you? Hollie, you must have been blind to have had a relationship with a man like that!"
Hearing this, my mother immediately stood up in anger.
"Mom, don't be angry. It's all in the past now. It's not worth getting angry over such a person."
Seeing my mother's angry expression, I quickly took her hand and comforted her.
At the thought of Vaughn, I felt nothing but disgust in my heart. Maybe I've really let go of him.
"I'm not angry, I'm just worried that you would be sad. You two have been together for so long, after all. You were really in love with him, but he did this to you. What a jerk!"
My mother looked at me with a distressed look and sighed.
"Mom, it's all over. Don't take it to heart. I'll ask the doctor about my father."
I patted my mother's shoulder and changed the subject.
Walking out of the ward, I took a deep breath and walked to my father's attending doctor's office.
The doctor told me that my father was in a great shape, so the operation would have lesser risk. Hearing this, I felt less anxious.
