"The reason why I asked for leave is that my best friend broke up with her boyfriend. I'm comforting her, okay?"
I was a little angry and gave this reason. Now I really suspected that Brandon was deliberately going against me. Otherwise, why would he grasp at straws like this?
After I said that, he was silent for a few seconds. Then he hung up.
"So weird!"
Looking at the phone that was hung up, I was speechless. Had Brandon lost his mind lately? Why did he keep giving me trouble?
After the call ended, I bought some breakfast and went back to Evie's house. She needed someone by her side right now. When I broke up with Vaughn, she was the one who stayed by me, so now I wanted to stay by her as well.
When I returned to her house, she was already awake. She sat on the sofa, hugging her legs and staring blankly ahead.
I put the food on the table and walked over to her side.
"Evie, why didn't you sleep a little longer?"
I put my arm around her shoulders and looked at her with concern.
"I can't sleep. I kept thinking about how he brought another woman to meet me."
She looked at me blankly. As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes.
I held her in my arms and sighed helplessly. I didn't know how to comfort her. "This matter will soon pass. Look at me, I'm doing well now. Trust me, you'll forget him soon."
Heartbreak was painful in the beginning, but time really did heal all wounds. It was just like me and Vaughn. Even though I still felt a little upset when I thought of him, it didn't hurt anymore.
"Hollie, have you really forgotten him? You're not sad anymore?"
Looking at me with some suspicion, she asked this question seriously.
"I'm enjoying my life every day. Do I look like I'm sad? Trust me, Evie, you'll come out of this better than ever. Don't torment yourself over a jerk. It's not worth it."
"But I feel so sad. Without him, it is as if I have lost the whole world. Hollie, what did I do wrong? Why did he do this to me?"
Evie grabbed my hand and looked at me in agitation.
"He's just a scumbag. It doesn't matter how perfect you are, he will never cherish you. Evie, come on, open your eyes and see him for who he is! It's better for you if you recognise his true colours early."
I said this loudly and looked at her seriously.
I couldn't stand watching her spiral like this anymore. That scumbag wasn't worth her sadness. Did she still think they had a chance?
Looking at me blankly, it took a long time for her to come back to her senses. She knew that what I said made sense, but she still couldn't get over it.
After all, she had given everything to that scumbag Gabriel. She had been betrayed all of a sudden. It would take time for her to walk out of this pain. But when I thought that she was so sad because of that scumbag Gabriel, I felt that it was not worth it.
Evie was still crying. I didn't say anything else to comfort her. I just pulled her over to the dining table.
"Eat something first. Don't ruin your health for a jerk."
I gave her the sandwich I had bought and told her seriously.
Evie was tired after crying all night. She didn't refuse. She lowered her head and took small bites out of the sandwich.
