Chloe heard the request and thought it was downright ridiculous. Since when does a bridesmaid step in for the groom? She immediately shook her head, "Sorry, I've done my part. You'll have to find someone else for this kind of thing."
Without a second thought about Linda's reaction, Chloe turned to walk away, but Linda grabbed her arm with surprising force. Turning back, Chloe saw Linda's eyes filled with tears, pleading.
"Chloe, just this once, please help me."
A beam of light highlighted Linda's face, her expression a mix of desperation and hope. Her grip on Chloe's arm trembled slightly. Linda looked so vulnerable, so in need of help—just like when they first met. But Chloe had seen through that act long ago.
"Let go. I'm not interested in playing make-believe with you."
"Chloe, this is my wedding. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing."
Chloe chuckled, not hiding her sarcasm, "Well, congrats on ruining your own wedding."
