Should I open it and uncover the secret? Chloe lingered in indecision for quite a while. Eventually, she decided against turning on the phone. Instead, she tucked it away in a box and stashed it on the topmost shelf of the bookcase.
Linda was gone. Nothing else mattered now, and Chloe had no desire to dig deeper. Linda, I don't want to cling to those shadowy, tangled memories. Let everything be buried with your departure.
That's what Chloe thought back then. Little did she know, this phone would turn into a ticking time bomb on some random day in the future, ready to blow up and turn her world upside down.
After securing the phone, Chloe went back to her room. Unable to sleep, she wandered out to the balcony. Connor woke up soon after, grabbing a blanket and joining her outside, wrapping it around her shoulders.
"What’s on your mind?" he asked.
Chloe snuggled deeper into the blanket. "I’m thinking of visiting Linda’s child tomorrow."
Connor wrapped his arms around her from behind. "If you can’t let go of that child, why not be his godmother?"
Chloe tilted her head up, intrigued. "You’re okay with that?"
That was Lucas's child, after all. Wouldn't Connor feel a twinge of jealousy? Since when had he become so broad-minded?
In the past, Connor would’ve definitely been bothered. But Linda had died saving Chloe. Whatever kind of person Linda was, all past grudges and disputes had vanished with her passing.
Most importantly, he knew Chloe harbored guilt. She felt responsible for the child. Letting go wasn’t an option for her.
Connor said, "I really don’t mind."
