It was now just past 1:00 pm. Gerard returned from the client lunch he'd attended in Dominic's place. He'd had a bit too much to drink, but the afternoon workload wasn't going to shrink itself.
Everything he couldn't handle naturally fell to Vespera. Her body had already been aching like it was falling apart, and now even her bones felt sore from the inside out.
Meanwhile, Dominic had taken a nice, peaceful nap. Then, he jumped into back-to-back video calls.
She didn't bother waking him when lunch break ended. Let him sleep as long as he wanted.
When she came back from the marketing department downstairs and brought him a fresh cup of coffee, he was already awake, mid-way through another international video conference.
She placed the coffee quietly on his desk and left just as quickly.
He only glanced at her for a few seconds as she came and went, showing no sign of distraction.
…
Right before the end of the workload, Rebecca invited Vespera to her place for dinner.
Vespera agreed. At the end of the day, as she stepped out of the office and walked toward the elevator, she heard footsteps behind her.
"Vespera, do you have plans tonight?" Gerard asked.
Dominic had told him to ask, and he was starting to feel like an accomplice.
Vespera's gaze flicked toward Dominic's face ever so lightly, and she replied honestly. "Yeah. I'm going to Becca's for dinner." Then added, "I won't be going home tonight."
Dominic's expression remained calm—as deep and unreadable as still water.
The elevator arrived, and the three of them stepped in.
The tension in that tiny, enclosed space was thick, like they were all heading to the underworld instead of the parking garage.
Right before the doors opened, Dominic finally spoke. "There are a lot of people at her place. Staying over wouldn't be appropriate."
Vespera replied, "She lives alone."
Dominic said, "Didn't you know her brother's staying with her over the summer?"
