For a few seconds, the air was still. Luke's face remained expressionless.
Vespera slowly lifted her head and said to John with a calm expression, "There's no rush for me. Treat him first. If you delay, he'll end up at the funeral home."
John was speechless. Despite not grasping the nuances of romantic relationships between men and women, the old man was no fool. He chose not to reply to the remark.
Instead, he sat in front of Vespera and told her to take off her shoes and place her foot on the small leather stool. Then, he poured medicated oil into his hands to massage her ankle.
"This might hurt a little," he warned.
"Of course, no problem," Vespera responded confidently.
However, she quickly realized her mistake. The pain was intense! She instinctively tightened her grip on her phone and tried to calm her breathing.
She wouldn't scream or shout. In fact, she grew quieter, and her expression was calmer the more pain she felt. This led John to believe she wasn't actually scared of the pain, so he used considerable force with his hands.
She was on the verge of fainting from the pain.
"Could you be a bit more gentle?" Luke intervened, reaching out to stop John.
John chuckled loudly. "See, she's not even crying out in pain. She's really tough. There's no problem."
Luke felt an unexpected bitterness rise in his throat. He wished she hadn't been so strong. He wished she had been able to cry and express her emotions with him back then, so he could have understood how heartbroken and sad she truly was.
He already knew he wasn't right for her, yet she had pretended convincingly, just as she was now. He knew her personality well. He recalled an incident at a sports event where she had tumbled from the platform, slicing her knee on the iron block's edge.
While receiving stitches, her face turned pale, and she was drenched in a cold sweat. He later discovered that she definitely felt the pain but believed that yelling wouldn't help. Instead, she chose to quietly endure it.
