Chapter 303 Was it an Accident or Man-made?

1…

Was the subtext that he also wanted to stay here?

At this, I was at a loss for words, lying in the hospital bed staring at the ceiling, feeling somewhat of a headache.

I didn’t know if it was because of the two guardian angels, but I really fell asleep. When I woke up, it was already very late.

There was no one in the ward, but the sound of fragmented conversations came from the corridor.

When I was very small, I slept in such a way that my back hurt a bit. I got up and went to see what was going on. When I reached the door, the conversation outside became increasingly clear.

“Hilda’s death was no accident. She had numerous hidden injuries, clearly indicating she had fought with someone before the fire. I must get to the bottom of this,” the voice of Captain Lucas choked up a bit.

I paused for a moment, recalling that after I left the police station, I had heard about a fire at Captain Lucas’s house. Because my mother and Alexander had an accident in Dracview, I was too worried at the time, so I never asked about what happened at Captain Lucas’s house.

Hilda died?

To my surprise, the door of the ward was opened, and Walter and Captain Lucas outside the door both looked at me.

I was stunned for a few seconds, then came back to my senses, looked

at the two people, tugged at my lips, and said, “I… want to go for a walk.” The door opened too suddenly, and I didn’t react for a moment.

Walter pursed his lips, his voice as cold as ever, “I’ll accompany you.”

I shook my head, wanting to refuse, and looked at Captain Lucas who was standing by, saying, “No need, I can go by myself, you guys continue your conversation.”

Captain Lucas spoke up first, “It’s okay, we’ve finished talking. I have other things to do, you guys carry on.

After speaking, he greeted and left.

Watching Captain Lucas leave, I glanced sideways at Walter standing nearby. There were too many questions I was curious about in my mind, but I didn’t know how to start.

Hesitating, Walter spoke up, “Let’s go.”

After speaking, he went into the ward, took his coat and draped it over me. We went together to the flower bed at the bottom of the hospital building. In the hospital at night, there were people coming and going, some were anxious family members, and some were patients tormented by disease to the point of lifelessness. I sat down by the flower bed.

The winter in River City was dry and cold. It was bearable when there was no wind, but once the wind blew it felt like bone-chilling blades were cutting into your body.

“Did Ms. Merchant really die?” I blurted out, not knowing how to ask, so I just asked bluntly.

Walter seemed to know I would ask this, he nodded, his voice cold and indifferent, “He died after being rescued from the fire and taken to the hospital.”

He summed it up in one sentence. I wanted to ask a lot, but I also knew that Walter was a man of few words. After hesitating for a few

seconds, I couldn’t help but ask, “Was her death an accident or was it man-made?”

Walter didn’t directly answer my question. Instead, he fell silent for a moment before saying, “Ezra’s death angered the people on the border.”

I almost instantly realized that Captain Lucas had spent these years in River City with the intention of wiping out the lawless elements endangering our homeland at the border. He had followed the lead of my kidnapping years ago and traced it to Ezra. After all these years of struggle, he finally eliminated the cancer that was Ezra.

The group at the border was deeply entrenched, and now that Ezra was dead, it was not hard to imagine that his subordinates would not be content. Some people wanted to avenge him, which seemed to be an expected matter.

After returning from Chesterburg, I thought this matter had ended, but now it seems, I’m afraid it might have just begun.

After a few seconds of silence, I couldn’t help but speak up, “Those people couldn’t have been targeting Captain Lucas alone, we…” Walter and I had participated in all the activities at that time.
