Chapter 444 No Home to Return To

Saying so, he took off his suit jacket and put it on me.

The long-lost warmth made my nose tingle, and tears uncontrollably fell from my eyes.

Seeing me cry, he became somewhat flustered, “No, why are you crying? What’s wrong? Come on, I’ll take you inside. You can take a good bath, warm up, and avoid getting sick.”

Seeing him about to press the doorbell, I grabbed him, shaking my head and said, “Take me to the hotel, don’t go in.”

He asked, puzzled, “What happened?”

Wiping away my tears, I took a deep breath and said, “Mother doesn’t want to see me now.”

He paused, letting out a slight sigh, “Auntie Eileen might still be angry, and so are you. The words you said to her before, they hurt her feelings.”

I pursed my lips, not knowing what to say.

He didn’t say much more either, he took me and left the Conner’s place.

Instead of letting me stay in a hotel, he took me to a duplex in the city. Looking at the decoration of the house, I looked at him, genuinely curious, “This house…”

“I bought it.” he handed me the slippers and said, “It was somewhat inconvenient when I was living at your place, so I bought an apartment and moved out. You can stay here for now, just let me know if you

need anything. Go take a shower first, I’ll make some ginger tea to warm you up.”

He muttered under his breath as he pushed me into the bathroom.

After taking a hot shower, I finally felt alive again. Alexander made ginger tea and urged me to drink it before he started questioning me. He asked why I suddenly decided to leave with Daniel? Why did I say those things to my mother? What happened to me at the border over the past two months?

By then, I didn’t hide anything anymore, I told him everything one by

one.

After listening, he furrowed his brows, looking at me and said, “Such a big thing happened and you didn’t mention anything to me? Tabatha, are you a pig?”

I pursed my lips, sighing slightly, “At that time, I thought that if I left the country with Ezra, I might never be able to come back, so I said those harsh words to my mother. I didn’t expect that I could come back, let alone that so many things would happen.”

He looked at me helplessly and said, “You know so much has happened, what are you planning to do now? Your aunt doesn’t know the situation, she thought you were as willful as you were five years ago, that’s why you left with Ezra, it’s understandable that she’s angry. As long as you find an opportunity to explain to her, it will be fine once her anger subsides. However, it’s the Hinton family, Ezra used you to kill Walter’s father, and in the end, they couldn’t even leave a complete corpse. Although you were trying to save him from the beginning to the end, the result is still like this. If someone with ulterior motives takes advantage of this, I’m afraid the Hinton family will ”

I understood his meaning, feeling choked up inside. Elliott’s death was

–

something I never anticipated. I had always thought he was a police

officer, that I could help him escape, could send him back to his country. But I never imagined that this would be the final outcome.

From the moment Ezra sent me into the mountains, he probably started scheming. He knew Elliott’s identity, so he had Geraldine cause trouble for me, creating an opportunity for me to meet Elliott. Then he used Marguerite to help me, everything went so smoothly that I mistakenly thought no one would notice what I wanted to do.

No wonder he said he wanted to see if Walter would trust me as I trusted him. From beginning to end, all he wanted was for us to hate each other, with no possibility of reconciliation.

I shook my head, feeling frustrated and confused. At this point, I didn’t know how to face what was coming next.

Seeing me like this, Alexander sighed slightly, “Take a break, you can’t do much in your current state.”

Looking at him, I said, “I want to go see Walter.” He was injured at the border trying to save me, and I have no idea about his current condition. I want to go see him, as long as he’s okay, I’ll be at ease.

Alexander pushed me back onto the sofa, saying, “No, the most important thing for you right now is to rest. I’ll go and find out about Walter.”

I shook my head, my voice a bit hoarse, “I want to see him with my own eyes. As long as he’s okay, that’s all that matters. Otherwise, even if I stay here, I won’t be able to rest easy.”
