Although she managed to hold back her voice, her body tensed up instantly due to the pain caused by the ointment. Huston knew she was in great pain, but there was no immediate relief he could offer. He could only desperately restrain his own anxiety and apply the ointment even more gently for her.
After more than ten minutes, all the wounds were finally covered with ointment.
Huston immediately averted his gaze and took a deep breath. "Stay lying down, and don't move. Get up after the ointment dries."
He didn't dare to look at her anymore. One more look would make his heart ache so much that he felt suffocated.
However, Evelyn suddenly understood. "Did I scare you? Let Sadie apply it for me in the future..."
"I feel really distressed." Huston interrupted her self-deprecating words. Seeing those wounds would fill him with a surge of anger in his chest, even though this anger was inexplicable to him. He just couldn't control it.
"I saw you suffering, and I can't do anything about it, which is agonizing for me. It has nothing to do with you, so please don't dwell on it," he said, without giving her a chance to respond, and walked directly towards the open balcony connected to the bedroom.
Following his departing steps, Evelyn looked over and saw him closing the balcony door. He then took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lit one with impatient fingers, brought it to his lips, and took a deep drag while bowing his head.
The white smoke dispersed from his lips, and his expression appeared somewhat blurry and distant, making it hard to discern clearly. Yet, the lingering sense of melancholy and low spirits around him was unmistakable.
She underwent the treatment, enduring the pain with determination and a steadfast goal in mind.
But she didn't expect that he was the one who was more stressed than her.
She had never anticipated such a scene; perhaps it was because he cared too much about her. Therefore, even the slightest sign of discomfort from her made him so anxious.
This couldn't go on like this.
