And so, the couple brought Lena back home.
But they didn't expect that in such a harsh environment, Lena would still thrive. Not only did she obtain a full scholarship from school based on her excellent grades, but she also received an additional scholarship.
For the sake of these scholarships, Blake and Clare didn't prevent her from going to school.
From elementary school onwards, Lena was able to support herself with these scholarships. She knew that studying was her only way out, so she studied relentlessly.
On the night she took the university entrance exam, Lena unintentionally overheard a conversation between the couple.
They never intended to let her go to college, no matter what school she got into.
Because they knew well that they had treated Lena badly, and once Lena saw the vast world outside, she would never return to this impoverished little mountain village. Their original intention in adopting Lena was to have her bear children for their mentally disabled son.
Upon discovering the truth, Lena didn't plead with them. Instead, she calmly packed her few belongings and quietly escaped in the middle of the night.
After enduring years of abuse in that home, she understood very well that Blake would never listen to her pleas. He would only intensify the torment, forcing her to submit.
Lena could only run away.
"Afterward, I obtained a full scholarship with outstanding grades. Combined with my part-time job, I saved enough money for studying abroad." Lena lifted her glass and drank it all in one go.
Under the influence of alcohol, her cheeks flushed. She mocked her own destiny. "I thought I had completely escaped them, but I didn't expect the people in the village to see me and pass on the news to them."
The first thing the couple wanted to do was to take her back and marry her off to their mentally disabled son. Otherwise, they threatened her that they would go to the media and accuse Lena of abandoning her parents, thereby ruining her career and life.
