Connor and Flora headed to the hospital together. As they walked into the ward, they happened to see Alyssa coming out, her eyes red and puffy from crying.

“Ms. Flora,” Alyssa said, quickly wiping away her tears when she saw Flora. “Has Shawn woken up?”

“He’s awake now.” Alyssa looked exhausted, having not slept all night. “Ms. Flora, it’s good you’re here. Can you please talk to him? He’ll listen to you.”

Alyssa’s voice caught in her throat as she finished speaking. Flora gave her a reassuring nod, then turned the doorknob and stepped inside the room.

Connor waited quietly by the door. As a man, he understood that Shawn probably didn't want too many people to see him in his current state.

Shawn had heard Flora’s voice from outside and quickly straightened up. When Flora walked in, he forced a smile. “Flora, you’re here.”

In truth, he didn’t want Flora to see him like this. Dr. Ray and his team had just left an hour ago, and now Flora was here.

Flora glanced at the untouched, cold food on the table, then turned her gaze to Shawn. “Shawn, your hand...”

“I already know!” Shawn interrupted, his smile strained. “Flora, I know exactly what’s wrong with my hand. You don’t have to feel sorry for me.”

He feared that Flora, like everyone else in the lab, would look at him with pity. “Even if I can’t perform surgeries anymore, I can still be a professor at the University of Maple Grove and contribute to the medical field.”

Flora stared at him for a few moments. Shawn’s forced smile began to waver.

“Take care of yourself. As long as I’m here, what you’re worried about won’t happen.”
