Karter had gulped down three big mugs of beer and only stopped when he absolutely couldn't drink another drop. His phone, sitting on the bedside table, buzzed with a notification.
As he picked it up, the grin on his face froze once he read the message. Flora, who was sitting close by, peeked at the screen. It looked like a text from Racing Club 257 about the details of a tryout race.
"Dad, is it from Racing Club 257?" Adrian guessed, noticing Karter's expression.
"Yeah." Karter shifted his gaze from the phone to the window, looking distant and lost in thought. After a moment, he chuckled as if he had come to terms with something. "Well, it looks like it might really be the end of the road for the Reyes Racing Team."
No one could fault him for feeling this way. The mood in the hospital room turned heavy.
Karter put the laptop back on the bedside table, his hand trembling slightly. Even though he seemed to accept the situation, it was hard to truly let go. This was the Reyes Racing Team he had always looked after, and now he could only watch as it fell apart.
Seeing Karter so down, Flora pressed her lips together and asked, "Can we add someone to the team at the last minute?"
"Huh?" Karter was momentarily caught off guard by her question.
Flora's voice remained laid-back and cool, "I mean, I could stand in for the Reyes Racing Team in the tryout."
Her words were soft but clear enough for everyone to hear. Karter and Ryan were both taken aback.
