Alyssa fell silent.
Tim continued, "Ryder's back home too, you might want to see his reaction when he finds out Jared and Agnes are remarried. Ryder's a man of few words, but he's got depths you can't fathom. He's got the same stubborn streak as Jared. Do you think he'll just walk away? Are you willing to watch these brothers tear each other apart over a woman?"
Tim's words were stark, but they rang true to Alyssa. It was the harsh reality, and it was her greatest worry.
Ryder was not one to back down. He had kept his relationship with Agnes and her child hidden so well over the years, and he had even dedicated his entire career to saving the child. His affection for Agnes was clear as day in his eyes.
Alyssa dreaded to think what his reaction would be upon seeing Jared and Agnes together now.
Tim added, "It hurts either way. If Jared's happy, Ryder's hurt. And if Ryder's happy, Jared's hurt. Might as well let them both bear the pain."
When Agnes entered, she was calm. She had felt nervous on the way over, but now, it was as if she had already walked into the gallows.
She was at peace.
As Agnes ascended the stairs with Nocturne, she saw Alyssa standing on the second-floor landing, watching her quietly. Her expression was complex, a surface of apathy while a storm raged beneath.
"Alyssa!" Agnes called out.
Alyssa's face shifted. The last time she was home, Agnes had looked at her with cold, complex emotions. But now, it was different, and she had greeted her.
To be honest, it had been four years since she had heard her greeting her.
Ever since they had come clean with each other four years ago, Agnes had been avoiding her.
