Agnes had never paid much mind to workplace gossip, nor had she ever felt the need to explain herself. After all, her relationship with Jared was bound to be discovered by her colleagues sooner or later.
But when Yolanda began to smear her name, Agnes couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.
Yolanda was livid when she found out about the rumors circulating in the office.
Agnes, after all, used to be an actress. Her innocent and righteous demeanor in the office had convinced everyone to take her side.
Yolanda alone knew about Agnes' façade of pretense.
Now, almost everyone was accusing Yolanda of favoritism and harboring unresolved feelings for Jared. Even the station manager had heard about the rumors.
In the afternoon, Yolanda was summoned to the manager's office to explain herself. Despite the lengthy explanation and proving her innocence, Yolanda exited the office with anger.
As Yolanda strutted into the News Department in her high heels, she barked at Agnes, “Agnes, get in my office.”
Seeing the fury in Yolanda's eyes, Agnes knew her days were about to get tougher.
Everyone looked at Agnes with sympathetic expressions. Ramona advised, “No matter what the director says, just let it go in one ear and out the other. Don’t let her provoke you into quitting. If you quit, you lose.”
Agnes was the first one in a while who dared to stand up to the director, so everyone naturally sided with Agnes. They even came up with a slogan, "Protect our Agnes.”
Agnes replied coldly, “I’ve learned many things over the years, but one thing stands out. Never tolerate insults. If you mess with me, I will retaliate in kind. That’s fair. Yolanda, let’s cut to the chase. You started the gossip to damage my reputation. I simply turned the tables on you. Now that you’re reaping what you sowed, don’t blame others.”
Yolanda clenched her fist. This was not the Agnes she remembered.
The Agnes she knew was a woman who hid behind Jared, always laughing off any humiliations for the sake of not causing him any trouble.
She had never seen her as defiant and confident as she was now.
Yolanda sneered, “Agnes, you’ve become shameless, using your ex-husband for your own gain.”
