Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared) novel Chapter 888

Berlin and Laura had taken him from her, and now Berlin was walking free after only six years behind bars. It was a cruel joke, a mockery of everything her father had taught her about right and wrong.

As the figure she'd spotted earlier slipped into a room, Agnes didn't hesitate. She followed, her heart pounding with a mix of dread and determination. Bursting into the room, she found herself in the middle of a corporate boardroom, men and women in suits turning to stare at her unexpected intrusion. At the head of the table sat Berlin, the man she despised more than anyone else in the world.

Berlin's face blanched when he saw Agnes. He stood up abruptly, his reaction betraying his surprise.

A man finally broke the silence, "Which department are you from? We're in the middle of some big league discussions, lady! Who let you in?"

But Agnes barely heard them. Her gaze was fixed on Berlin, her fingers curling into fists at her sides. The room was a whirlwind of confusion, but she pushed it all away, focusing on the man in front of her.

Berlin finally addressed the situation, "Let's wind up for today, guys. Time for a break."

To everyone's amazement, they all complied. After all, Berlin was the newly crowned Deputy General Manager. Respect for rank tends to do that.

As the room emptied, leaving only the two of them, the tension was palpable.

Agnes spoke first, her voice low and controlled. "How are you out? You belong in a cell, Berlin."

Berlin's laugh was a sound she'd never forget—a mixture of arrogance and scorn. "My dear girl, I was set free. Laura took the fall, and I was exonerated. Your father's death is on her now, not me."
