Rafael pulled his wife to stand in front of him and gently rubbed her bruised eye. "Does it hurt?"
"Just a little," Carissa replied, pulling his hand away and glancing back, wary of any onlookers.
"Don't worry. No one's coming in. What happened?" he asked, concern etched across his face.
After maintaining her composure for so long, Carissa finally relaxed. She sank into a chair and rubbed her eye, realizing it was indeed a bit more swollen than earlier.
That wretched Travis!
"I was sparring with Violet this morning, and then Rod jumped in. Both of us ended up getting accidentally hit by his fists."
"Let's dock his pay," Rafael said, both amused and sympathetic.
Though Travis was typically well-behaved, he tended to revert to the playful demeanor of a youth when he was with Violet and Carissa.
Carissa chuckled. "Docking his pay might cost him his life. Money is one thing, but if Alana finds out and tells his master, she'll certainly send orders for further punishment."
"Just scare him a bit, but don't actually dock his pay," Rafael replied, knowing their bond was strong.
Such childhood friendships were rare, and he had no intention of ruining that.
"Yeah. But enough about that. Let's talk business." Carissa's expression turned serious. "His Majesty has asked me to recommend Barrett for the position of commander of the Crown Guard. The Civil Department will draft the transfer documents."
"The king has been wanting to use Barrett for a while. It's just that he hasn't been living up to expectations. Now that he's finally achieved something, it makes sense for him to be promoted. The Crown Guard may technically be part of the Mystic Army, but they actually take direct orders from the king. It's just a transitional phase now," replied Rafael, who wasn't surprised at all.
"Yes, you're right. His Majesty is planning to establish a separate office for the Crown Guard. Once that happens, they'll likely separate from the Mystic Army," Carissa agreed.
"The Crown Guard is already among the 12 units in the Royal Guard, but His Majesty wants to set them apart. He's training his trusted confidants. Barrett is the best choice, especially considering his past with you. The Warren family's resentment is practically echoing down to the Southern Frontier," Rafael added.
Carissa's expression hardened. "Some people are really strange. They make mistakes then blame others."

I wish there were more chapters uploaded daily. Atleast 10 per day....
When will the next chapter be uploaded? This story is so awesome!...
I’ve read several novels, but this is the best of the best....
I hope that Rafael will not fall for Carmen. I don’t think I can keep reading if he does. Carissa deserves to have a pure and strong love with Rafael that world stand the test of time and all trials and tribulations....
