Upon hearing Olive's apology, Brandon remained silent and softly replied, "Rest well for now. I'll come over tomorrow afternoon."
Olive persisted in apologizing, her determination evident. Brandon paused for a few seconds before saying, "Get some proper rest."
He then ended the call.
Sitting beside Brandon, Sandy looked at him as he hung up the phone. Finally, she spoke, "Is she... okay?"
Brandon set his phone aside and turned to Sandy, asking in a hushed tone, "Will you come with me tomorrow afternoon?"
Sandy nodded after a slight delay. "Sure."
That night, someone was destined to have a sleepless night.
In the advanced ward of the first hospital.
Olive leaned pale against the bedhead, her vacant gaze fixed on the window. No one could discern her thoughts.
Nelson handed a glass of warm water to Olive. "Have some water first."
Olive hesitated before shifting her gaze away and then looked at the glass Nelson offered. She tried to reach for it, but her lack of strength caused her to falter. Eventually, she could only drink a few sips by cupping her hands around Nelson's.
Nelson observed her and let out a sigh. "What are you doing? You know very well that once he makes up his mind, it's nearly impossible to change."
Nelson realized his words might not be appropriate at this time, but the truth often struck a raw nerve. Harsh words needed to be spoken, even if they were difficult to hear.
Resentment toward Brandon still lingered in the hearts of some Longman family members. They believed that Olive's lack of marriage plans over the years was partly due to Brandon. However, when Olive left Viteto, the Longman family had been supportive. Ultimately, their hearts were completely on Olive's side.
After Nelson's comment, Olive finally managed a self-deprecating smile. "So, green plums really can't compete with heavenly rain?"
Nelson furrowed his brows. "Olive, have you ever considered that even if you had stayed back then, even if a celestial being descended, Brandon might not have..."
"Isn't she younger than us?"
Before Nelson could finish, Olive cut him off.
Meeting Olive's gaze, Nelson remained silent for a few seconds before explaining, "Younger than us, about six or seven years younger than Brandon."
Due to her pale complexion, it was difficult to discern Olive's emotions at this moment. Her voice was soft as she murmured, "It's all right."
Nelson watched Olive, wanting to say more, but the words seemed to stick in his throat.
After all, saying anything at this point might seem superfluous.
They remained silent for a while before Nelson spoke again. "No matter what, you need to love yourself. If you don't love yourself, how can you expect others to love you?"
Olive shifted slightly and gazed emptily at the ceiling above her. "Nelson, why doesn't he want me anymore? I thought... I thought he would wait for me, I thought..."
"Olive, no one will wait in one place forever. Change is inevitable."
Nelson's interruption prompted Olive to fall silent once more. In a soft voice, she asked, "Is that so?"
"Yes."
Olive's lips curled into a faint smile as she whispered, "Tell me something, Nelson."
Nelson responded, "What is it? Go ahead."
Just as Nelson thought Olive had nothing more to say, she surprised him by speaking up again. "I'm going to give it a try."
Hearing this, Nelson felt a weight lift from his chest. As long as Olive was willing to let go, the situation would be easier to handle.
Nelson had been concerned that Olive's stubbornness would force her to cling to Brandon despite his lack of affection. Such a scenario could lead to an embarrassing and unsuitable outcome.
Hearing Olive's decision, Nelson was relieved. "Olive."
"Yes?"
"Are you sure this isn't a bit ridiculous? He no longer cares about your place in his heart, yet you're still attempting to get his attention."
Nelson's teasing tone elicited a smile from Olive, though the pain from her wound made her suppress it. "And what would you suggest?"
"What's stopping you? If he doesn't care about you anymore, why not give him a good smack?"
Olive chuckled, but the pain caused her to stop abruptly. "Do you think I could bring myself to do that?"
"Why not? If he no longer loves you, why hesitate to give him a slap?"
Olive laughed softly, but refrained from responding.
Indeed, he no longer loved her.
No matter how she acted, she couldn't change the fact that Brandon no longer loved her.
So, whether she attempted to provoke him or took Nelson's advice to heart and actually slapped him, nothing would alter that reality.
