Jim muttered under his breath, "He will."
Mrs. Bart wanted to explode, but in the midst of this public setting, she didn't quite know how to chastise him. She settled for a cold tone, "I don't know how to broach this matter with your father. You'll have to handle it when you go back."
"What about you?" Jim looked at Mrs. Bart, his gaze unwavering. "What do you think?"
Mrs. Bart stared back at Jim. "Does it really matter what I think? I can't just sever ties with you, or hold a knife to your throat and force you to break up with him. Even if I did manage that, could you just obediently marry someone else, have kids, and live a normal life?"
"That's not possible."
"Does my opinion really matter?"
"There's still a difference." Jim's voice was low. "Even if you disagree, that's one thing. But I'm asking for your perspective. How do you see me? Do you, like others, think I'm abnormal or sick?"
Mrs. Bart took a deep breath. "You're my son."
Jim suddenly chuckled upon hearing this. "I understand, thank you."
Mrs. Bart's tone remained harsh. "I'm not an old fossil, nor have I never encountered this before. It's just that I'm struggling to accept it for the moment. I never thought my son would turn out this way. However, deep down, I still hope you can live a peaceful and smooth life. Everything else is secondary."
Jim was deeply moved by Mrs. Bart's words.
He had considered that his mother would be the most opposed, while his father might resort to a severe beating at worst. Yet, he hadn't expected his mother to be so understanding.
"Mom, how about meeting Nelson sometime?"
"We'll see."
Mrs. Bart didn't give a definite answer. She picked up her coffee and took a sip, then added in a low voice, "You should find a chance to confess to your father sooner rather than later. If he hears about it from someone else, your chances will be slim."
Jim nodded. "I understand. Thank you."
"Alright, go attend to your matters. I have a meeting with someone here."
Jim bid farewell to Mrs. Bart and left the café.
As Jim left, Mrs. Bart reached for her phone and dialed a number.
After a few rings, the call was answered. "Hello, who's this?"
"Is this Nelson? I'm Jim's mother. Do you have some time? I'd like to meet you and have a chat," Mrs. Bart got straight to the point. "I'm at the café across the street. I'll be waiting here for you."
On the other end of the call, Nelson remained silent for a moment before replying, "Sure, I'll be there in about ten minutes."
"Alright."
After hanging up, Nelson tucked his phone into his pocket and turned to Brandon. "Hey, Brandon."
Hearing Nelson's voice, Brandon turned to him. "What's up?"
"Come over for a moment."
Brandon excused himself to Sandy with a quiet word and then walked over to Nelson. "What's going on?"
Nelson hesitated before sharing, "I'm going over there for a bit. You take Sandy to look around. Later, we'll all go for dinner together."
