A petite 8-inch cake sat on the table. It was a deep blue cake with little yellow stars, a mini tent, and a little girl sitting inside the tent, hands clasped together, making a wish.
In the hospital room, Zoe sat on the sofa, gazing at the small cake. Her expression was girlish, her eyes sparkling. She exuded a gentle aura reminiscent of their early days of marriage when she looked at him with those same sparkling eyes.
Now, her softness was toward another man.
Just a cake was enough to make her so happy.
Mason recalled her words.
"Mason, I don't like you anymore."
'Has she fallen for Cecil?'
Mason's face darkened, and eventually, he burst into a mocking laugh. Suddenly, he didn't want to let Zoe go.
The divorce papers were torn into halves, turning into a pile of waste paper.
…
Zoe was about to cut the cake.
Mason entered, appearing in the hospital room. She saw his slightly pale face and subconsciously tried to hide the cake. It was the only precious thing she had after being confined by him. It was a childhood memory.
She knew who sent it.
She didn't send a thank-you text or make a call. She just accepted this gesture.
Zoe looked up at Mason.
After a while, he walked to her side and sat down. His gaze shifted from the cake to Zoe's face, his voice surprisingly gentle. "Why didn't you tell me about your birthday in advance? The housekeeper prepared a bowl of pasta for you at noon, but I ate it. Now, let's eat the cake together and celebrate your birthday."
"Mason."
Zoe knew him well. She looked at him, her lips trembling slightly.
Mason smiled faintly.
He reached out, gently caressing her red lips. His long fingers carried a hint of licentiousness.
He spoke softly after thoroughly enjoying the touch. "The cake from Cecil should taste good."
He asked again, "Do you like him?"
Zoe closed her eyes gently. "No. Mason, I don't."
Mason continued to smile lightly.
His voice was low and hoarse as he murmured, "I'm just curious. Why are you so nervous? Ms. Lockwood, I believe you wouldn't do anything to betray me. Otherwise, I really don't know who I would take my anger out on. I don't want to hurt you, but if it involves Cecil, you might feel a pang of heartache."
