When Ava realized she was about to be exposed, she knew she could no longer keep up the pretense. She was so angry that she trembled. "Yes, I'm Ava, but I came to the Reese Group to earn a living. What's more, I sincerely like Nathan. Why do you and Chloe insist on seeing me suffer?"
She was just about to be blessed with a lifetime of bliss, but Chloe had stepped forward to stop that.
"Who's helping you?" Joseph ignored her anger and went straight to the point. Knowing Ava’s strength, she could never have broken out of prison alone.
"No one helped me. I'm all alone and have no ulterior motives." Crying and shouting, Ava clung to Nathan's thigh. She begged piteously, "Although my identity is fake, I'm sincere toward you. We're about to get married. Please give me another chance. I won't lie to you ever again."
The veins on Nathan's forehead bulged. He kicked her away. "Call the police and have her arrested."
"No! Don't call the police! Didn't you say you love me? Why aren't you willing to give me a chance? I did lie to you but I didn't hurt you."
She had not done that at least. She dreamed of becoming a rich and noble lady. Now, she was just one step away from her dream and was unwilling to give up.
"What I liked was your face," Nathan said hatefully and cruelly as he pinched her chin. "If you didn’t look like Serenity, I wouldn’t give you the time of day.”
His good impression of her was built upon her looks which were very much like Serenity's. When the filter was shattered, the affection he had was naturally washed away.
When Hugo and Ivy heard Serenity's name again after so many years, they averted their gazes.
Ava's face burned from the slap. Nathan’s statement had humiliated her greatly, and she looked like she was suffering excruciating pain.
Joseph raised a brow but was not surprised at Nathan's action. Some men might fool around with women, but they cherished their first loves deeply. They would never forget about their first loves even after decades had passed.
After Hugo confirmed that his family had been fooled, he was filled with humiliation for needing Joseph’s help to settle his family’s affairs. He immediately called the police and admonished Nathan, telling him to go to their relatives and explain what had happened. Nathan looked tense as he kept his gaze lowered.
Joseph watched as the police took Ava away. The rest concerned only the Reeses, so he was not interested in meddling. As he was about to leave, Nathan stopped him.
"Joe."
"Yeah?"
