The nurse that was dozing off beside Chloe, was roused by the discomforting scent of the spreading alcohol beneath her feet. Just as she was about to investigate the situation, faint footsteps from outside the operating room reached her ears. But before she could look into it, a towering flame measuring two meters in height erupted. The flames engulfed the door of the operating room, transforming it into a fiery barrier.
The nurse stood frozen in shock as she witnessed the rapid progression of the fire. It quickly spread, following the alcohol on the floor. Within mere three minutes, the lower half of her body was consumed by the flames.
She screamed in agony, frantically searching for anything to put out the fire with, but the fire spread too quickly due to the large amount of accelerant present. Before she could effectively extinguish the flames, she had transformed into a blazing figure of horror.
"Aaahhh! Help! Save me! I’m on fire! It hurts! Help me!"
Chloe woke up to the nurse's screams. The hazy operating room greeted her with a thick cloud of smoke, causing her to cough uncontrollably as she regained consciousness. Each breath felt like a struggle as if her lungs were being weighed down by an immense stone. Her gaze fixated on the horrifying sight of the nurse covered in fire, leaving her frozen with terror.
Boom!
In an instant, a deafening crash filled the room as an iron structure fell from the ceiling, crashing down on the nurse. She instantly fell silent. Only the crackling of burning flesh and skin could be heard.
Chloe's eyes widened in horror, her entire body trembling uncontrollably. The excruciating pain in her lower abdomen served as a stark reminder that the terrifying scene before her was not a nightmare. She pulled out the needle on the back of her hand and mustered all her strength to climb off the operating room bed.
Just this one movement caused her intense pain and left her drenched in a cold sweat, but she could not afford to rest. The smoke was thick, stinging her eyes and making them teary. She grabbed the nearest towel and covered her mouth and nose, desperately searching for an exit. There were no windows in the operating room, and the only exit was blocked.
She crawled into a corner and desperately threw things around, hoping to create enough noise to draw attention from outside. There was no time for her to ponder whether this calamity was an accidental or a deliberate act. Tears blurred her vision, streaming down her face and evaporating instantly in the blistering heat of the raging fire.
As the flames grew fiercer, the towel she used to shield herself became ineffective. The searing smoke seemed to infiltrate every crevice, causing her to cough uncontrollably. With each movement, the incision from her cesarean section reopened, resulting in a steady flow of blood loss.
The frail Chloe was nearing her breaking point, but she clung to life with every ounce of strength. She had no intention of dying, not in the slightest.
In that desperate moment, her thoughts turned to the child she had brought into the world but never had the chance to meet. If she died, how would Joseph treat their child? Would he think of the child as Icarus' child and deliberately mistreat them?
On the other hand, if Xavia's child was born, they would instantly become the center of attention. No, she could not let her child bear this undeserved suffering. Her child became her sole source of belief and hope amid the chaos and uncertainty.
Chloe removed the towel and desperately shouted out for help. She quickly covered her mouth and nose again, attempting to shield herself from inhaling too much toxic fumes. But at that moment, the hospital seemed eerily silent as if it had abandoned her to her fate.
