Seeing how persistent yet miserable Maggie looked, Monica could not help but sigh and speak with a dry voice. "Maggie, I don't know what happened to you when you stayed at the Eagle Special Brigade, but if there is anything you can't let go of, you'd better not try to force yourself to let go of it, because I know you're a person who stubbornly insists on following your own ideas. If you give up, you will feel even more distressed."
Maggie turned her head to look at Monica, her eyes swelled with tears and her lips quivered because of what Monica had said. Her bosom friend knew and understood her too well! She should not have tried to live her life in this way, but love was so excruciating. For so many years, she had longed for Edgar and worked hard in order to get closer to him. Before leaving the Eagle Special Brigade, she truly believed that she had finally made such an impact that she could leave with her heart resting easy. However, later it seemed as though Edgar hadn't taken her seriously at all. Perhaps, from the beginning to the end, he believed that she was only joking.
With these thoughts running through her mind, Maggie set her cellphone aside and hugged Monica. In a soft voice, she mumbled, "Thank you, Monica. You're so kind. I'm so lucky to have you by my side."
While rolling her eyes, Monica hugged Maggie in return. In a sharp tone, she chided then, "All right. It isn't like you to say so many disgustingly gooey words. All you have to do is keep up your hopes and get back to being the tough girl I've always known. Look at yourself now! I just can't bear seeing you being so sentimental."
Despite being moved by the support, Maggie felt speechless. Yes, she was a tough girl, but Monica was no different. They could not bear expressing their feelings in such girly talk.
Nevertheless, Maggie felt a warmth inside her heart again. While Edgar was no longer here, she still had two bosom friends—Monica and Benjamin. Maybe she had been paying attention to the wrong things in her life. She was in college now, but she was still thinking about the Eagle Special Brigade.
Perhaps it was because of her sudden epiphany that she recovered very soon. However, a sudden heavy snow storm blew in, preventing her complete recovery from the influenza. Fortunately, the blisters on her mouth had gradually disappeared. Now she only coughed occasionally, which didn't matter that much.
As for the short messages to Edgar... After talking with Monica in the dormitory, Maggie thought it might be better for her to stop sending short messages to him, because without any response from him, these were meaningless. She thought she might go to the army to visit her father when the New Year came. By then, she could ask William to give consideration to his daughter's marriage and require Edgar to talk with her face to face.
Despite her plan to abstain from messaging him, she still sent a short message to Edgar when she lay on the bed in the evening. From that day onwards, the content of the short message she sent to Edgar every night remained the same...
"Edgar, I miss you. Do you miss me?"
Perhaps once she had fallen in love with somebody, she could not give up until she was hurt irreparably or became mentally and physically exhausted. Obviously she hadn't been hurt that badly yet. Because of this, she was still persistent.
Biting the pen in her hand, Maggie looked out of the window, lost in thought. The white snow covering world outside always looked dreamlike and encouraged people to indulge in their fantasies. A professor on the platform was droning on about different countries' opinions about and research on new type missile technologies. Certainly, the professor could only speak on something that was available to everybody, because any new type of missile technology was considered the top secret of a country.
After discussing some general knowledge about new type missile technologies, the professor declared distressing yet exciting news. Which was, they would have their final examination of the semester in a week. The leaders of all the armies would pay much attention to their examination results, which might partly determine which unit they would work at upon graduation. On the other hand, since the examinations were coming soon, their vacation was also not too far away, albeit, it would not last long. It was estimated that their vacation would be for about twenty days, including the first day of the New Year.
With a burst of cheers, they saw the professor off from the classroom with their eyes demurely turned down. Many students even offered half bows of respect to the professor. Due to the strict discipline of military colleges, the atmosphere when a class was over was different from other ordinary colleges, where a classroom would become as noisy and messy as a fish market.
Maggie was packing up her things as she had no intentions of attending the next class. She had taken battle commanding strategies and psychological warfare as selective courses. Now her aim was no longer about getting closer to Edgar. Going forward, she wanted to fight side by side with him!
Perhaps she was too obsessed.
However, Maggie looked calm now. Because of her choice and decision, Monica and Benjamin were dragged by her into also taking the two selective courses. It was okay for Benjamin. As a male student, he was quite interested in these topics. However, Monica was reluctant. In the end, she took the two courses only because she didn't want to part with Maggie or Benjamin. Therefore, she could do nothing but try to find something interesting in the two courses.
