Now that Clarissa knew the main character of this story was Iris Benson, she knew that it was no story, but things that had actually happened in real life. She was anxious to know why Iris kept targeting her, so she asked, “What happened after that? Is the actor’s name Charles Griffin?”
She vaguely remembered Leah mentioning that Iris and Charles had been an item and a perfect match in everyone’s eyes.
“After that?” The old man continued with his story.
“Iris told Charles that after returning to Lotharia, she had run into a fortune teller who told her that the mole would bring misfortune to her father, so she had it removed.”
“It was just a mole, so Charles didn’t think much of it. There was one thing he couldn’t get used to, though—Iris’s personality seemed to have changed after her return to Lotharia. In the past, she was rather childish while still maintaining her elegance as the daughter of an affluent family, and it made her very popular among men. Now that she was back in Lotharia, she seemed to be more farsighted, and they rarely shared the same views. Despite Iris’s efforts to seduce Charles, he seemed to become more and more disappointed in her, eventually leading to him wanting to leave her. He knew that people grow apart, but he didn’t expect it to happen to them so soon.”
“Iris could tell what he was thinking, and she tried her best to hold on to him. But relationships are about mutual affection—it doesn’t mean that the more effort you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it. The more Iris tried to hold on to Charles, the more he wanted to leave.”
“While Mildred tried to hold on to Charles, Iris was locked up in the attic, feeling tormented. Mildred had spent her whole life in the attic, never experiencing the outside world and never having hoped for anything. Without hope, one would never be disappointed. Iris, however, had experienced the pleasures of life, so keeping her locked up in the attic was much too cruel for her, not to mention that she was still pregnant. Every day, she wished for death.”
“This was exactly what Mildred wanted to see.”
“She wanted her sister to experience the torment she’d been through tenfold, and she wanted her sister’s child to experience it as well. She wouldn’t allow Iris to get rid of the baby because Iris would soon forget about it. Mildred wanted Iris to give birth to the baby, then allow her to spend some time with the baby before eventually taking the baby away from her…”
“Mildred thought she had come up with a wonderful plan.”
