Clarissa held the phone to her ear, but no sounds came through and she couldn’t hear anything. Her mouth was hung wide open.
What had Damien just said?!
Only static came through the line as they both stayed silent.
“Damien. Did… Did I do something wrong? You can tell me.” Clarissa’s voice trembled as she spoke.
“Shouldn’t you already know? Whose phone is this?” Damien asked again. “Where are you?”
“I’m at Uncle Victor’s house. I’m with my mother. My phone has no signal. Maybe I dropped it. I was going to send you a Whatsapp message, but…” Clarissa couldn’t get any more words out.
Damien had married Chanel? How was this possible?
Clarissa wondered if he was lying to her. That had to be it! He only wanted to trick her into going home.
It was only when the phone started growing hot by her ear that Clarissa lowered it.
Seth had been standing to the side while Clarissa made her call.
As he watched Clarissa hang up, looking numb and with her hand burned by the heat of the device, he went over to take the phone from her.
“What happened?”
Clariss’s mind was buzzing. She couldn’t pull herself together.
“He… He said that he married someone else.” Clarissa gave another sad chuckle. “He must be lying to me, right?”
“Married? So fast?” Seth frowned a bit.
“That’s right. No one gets married so quickly. He was so good to me before, too. He must be lying to me. I…” Clarissa wanted to say that she still wanted to remain in Lotharia for a few more days, but now, she really wanted to return to Merania. She knew Damien wouldn’t lie about getting married just to get her to go home. “Can you look after things here for me? Then…”
As Clarissa spoke, tears started falling, forming a broken chain of pearls down her face. She couldn’t hold them back.
Who he had married did not matter. The main thing was that he had gotten married at all.
Damien was sitting on the couch smoking. Neil had already gone to sleep.
When he saw the phone Clarissa was clutching in her hands, Damien asked, “Your phone has a signal now?”
“Yes. I don’t know why, but there was no signal at all in Lotharia. Maybe because of international roaming, so there was too weak a signal. I don’t understand it.”
Damien gave a cold snort. What a paltry excuse!
“Damien, can I ask why?” Clarissa inquired, face pale. “Have you really gotten married?”
Sarcastically, Damien shot back, “Where’s your mother? If you’ve saved her, where is she? Or did you ask some random person to take care of her for you?”
“Yes, I asked Uncle Victor to help me look after her,” Clarissa answered, feeling tremendously uneasy.
Damien gave another huff. “Uncle Victor? Don’t you mean someone else? Aren’t you getting engaged?”
