Meanwhile, Merry woke up in Bland's apartment, feeling like she had been handed a golden ticket. Sleeping in her idol's place had her too excited to catch much sleep, and now she found herself waking up way past 10 a.m. She buried her face into the pillow, not ready to start the day just yet.
Even though the sheets had been changed, the room still carried the unique scent of her idol. Merry inhaled deeply, reminiscing about the previous night...
Riding back with Floyd, the anticipation of staying at her idol's house had her buzzing with excitement. Thankfully, Floyd kept the conversation going, which helped distract her a bit.
What were they talking about again?
Oh, right. Floyd had asked about Yates’ life in Greenmeadow over the years.
Merry had known Yates since they were kids but only really got to know him in high school. Back in middle school, she only knew he went through a rough patch, seeming a bit lost and down.
Thinking back, it felt like Floyd was probing, trying to dig into Yates' past.
Out of curiosity, Merry had asked, “Yates is an amazing quarterback, why don’t you recruit him for the team?”
Floyd’s expression darkened a bit as he kept his eyes on the road, then let out a self-deprecating chuckle, “Guess I don’t measure up anymore.”
Merry wanted to press further, but seeing his troubled look, she hesitated. Still, she ventured, “You’re pretty lucky, you know. After that crash, everyone was affected one way or another, but you walked away without a scratch. The Eagles would’ve been history without you.”
Floyd didn’t respond.
As Merry was about to change the subject, they arrived at Bland's place.
The moment she saw her idol, all thoughts of gossip vanished. Her eyes lit up as she got out of the car. Floyd, being the gentleman, got out and handed her luggage to Bland.
To avoid paparazzi, Bland had masked up, making Floyd unable to recognize him immediately. As he handed over the luggage, Floyd said, “Got your girlfriend here safe and sound!”
Merry’s heart nearly leaped out of her throat at the word 'girlfriend'!
Before she could clarify, Bland casually took the luggage and thanked Floyd.
After the men exchanged a few words, Floyd left, and Merry, heartbeat racing, followed Bland into the elevator.
The elevator, cozy due to its design for single households, was filled with Bland's subtle cologne, intoxicating Merry with a sense of bliss she hadn’t known before.
As she dreamt of the future, a chuckle snapped her back to reality. Bland, now outside the elevator, was looking at her with a twinkle in his eyes. “Girlfriend, aren’t you coming out?” he teased.
Merry was speechless.
