"There’s no solution to this problem," Cordelia declared.
"The problem is flawed," Everard chimed in simultaneously. Cordelia blinked, her gaze shifting to Everard, who raised an eyebrow and then closed his mouth.
Cordelia was slightly taken aback. Had he noticed the issue right from the start, hence his calm demeanor? Maybe he was more competent than she had initially thought.
Lost in her thoughts, Cordelia was brought back to reality by Queenie's exclamation, "What? You guys must be joking! If you can't solve it, just say so. Claiming it's unsolvable is ridiculous, isn't it?"
Cordelia fixed her eyes on Lucille, preparing to speak, when Keen added, "It truly has no solution."
Queenie was stunned. She might have thought Cordelia was jesting, but hearing it from Keen made her reconsider.
She turned to Lucille, "Uncle, is it really unsolvable?"
Lucille frowned, coughing slightly before addressing Cordelia, "Why do you say it's unsolvable? Because you can't solve it, or...?"
Cordelia calmly responded, "It's missing a key piece of information. Without assigning a value to 'a,' indeed, this problem can't be solved."
Realizing Cordelia had actually pinpointed the oversight, Lucille was inwardly fuming. His intention with such a problem was to challenge them, revealing the solution later as a lesson. Yet, his plan was seen through.
Feeling his pride wounded, Lucille coughed again, "Ah, this problem was merely an appetizer. Miss Cordelia is correct."
He walked back to his desk, dismissing Everard with a wave, "You can sit down now."
Everard paused, glancing at Cordelia. Although she maintained her usual serene facade, Everard, who knew her well, could tell she was upset. When Cordelia was angry, she wouldn't lash out; instead, her eyes would cloud over.
He considered reacting but chose to comply quietly.
Lucille, back at the podium, picked up his textbook, "Alright, I intentionally omitted a piece of information. Now that I've added it, you can solve the problem. This was to teach you not to get stuck on one problem, especially during exams. Let me explain how to solve it now with the value of 'a' included."
As he was about to continue, he noticed Cordelia still standing, "Take a seat, please."
Cordelia remained still.
Lucille's brows furrowed, "What is it?"
Cordelia spoke slowly, "Sir, you asked what he was calculating. So, what are you, exactly?"
