“Carrie claimed she had a miscarriage,” Serenity told Zachary. “Camryn mentioned that Carrie wanted to undergo surgery and asked Trenton for money. Trenton offered to come back and take care of her, but Carrie refused. I’m guessing the miscarriage happened then. The way she looked at me just now—she probably remembered our past conflict. The hatred in her eyes showed she still doesn’t think she was wrong. In her mind, I’m the villain.” 
Carrie was truly hopeless. 
No matter how much she hated Serenity, Serenity wasn’t afraid of her. 
Now that Serenity understood Carrie’s true motives, she chose not to trust “Mrs. Labbe” or let her into her circle of friends. That alone was enough. If Carrie couldn’t complete her task, her financial backer would eventually lose patience and dispose of her. 
Even Camryn didn’t want Serenity to deal with Carrie. It wasn’t out of sisterly sentiment—Camryn simply wanted to handle Carrie herself. 
What Carrie hated most was watching Camryn marry the man she once coveted, a man who deeply loved his wife. When Camryn recovered and eventually became pregnant, Carrie would lose her mind with envy. 
Zachary’s voice dropped to a dangerous tone. “If she dares to lay a hand on you, I’ll make sure she learns the meaning of regret.” 
“Don’t worry,” Serenity reassured him. “I know how to protect myself. Besides, Carrie doesn’t have the ability to hurt me. She’s just a pawn, a plaything for her so-called financial sponsor. Sooner or later, she’ll be tossed aside. If her parents had disciplined her better—if they had shown Camryn even a shred of affection—none of this would’ve happened. Now, Camryn and Callum’s wedding will probably drive her completely insane.” 
“That’s her problem,” Zachary said firmly. He gently placed a hand on Serenity’s belly, his tone softening. “Right now, you just need to focus on taking care of yourself and our baby. Let everything else go.” 
“Callum and his wife probably hate Carrie even more than we do,” he continued. “They’re only holding back for Trenton’s sake. He values family loyalty.” 
Serenity nodded. “Trenton does care deeply about family. When he first learned that Camryn was the one who sent their father to jail, it was hard for him to accept. Even though he understood Camryn wasn’t at fault, he still resented her for putting justice above family loyalty. It took him time to come to terms with the truth. If Camryn killed Carrie now, I’m afraid it would completely destroy their relationship as siblings.” 
She sighed. “Camryn said that Trenton has always been her protector, her one constant as an older brother. That’s the only warmth she’s known in the past twenty years, and she values it deeply.” 
Serenity shook her head, determined to drop the topic. “Let’s not talk about Carrie anymore. Let’s go to the hospital for my prenatal checkup. After that, you can take me back to the company. You still need to work this afternoon.” 
As the driver pulled away, Zachary said, “Elisa’s managing your company for now. You and Jasmine should focus on the baby. There’s no rush to go back to work. Once the baby is born, you can pick up your career again.” 
After Elisa and Remy got engaged, they decided to postpone their wedding until after 
Serenity and Jasmine had their babies. Although Remy wanted to get married sooner, Elisa stood firm on waiting, and Remy respected her decision. Their wedding was planned for the end of the year. 
Earlier in the year, three other couples—Callum and Camryn, Kevin and Hayden, and Julian and Kiera—held their weddings together. Afterward, they all went off on honeymoons, leaving behind memories of beautiful celebrations.
