Chapter 206: Time in the inn_Part 1

The narrow alley Rohan pulled her into ended at another street, but Belle couldn’t say where they were. All she knew was that rain in snow was not something good and not something one should be caught in, because immediately the rain touched the ground, it froze into streaks and ice, just like the one that began to freeze her hair and limbs.

It was rare for something like this to happen in this land but Rohan had said it wasn’t usual.

The crooked lanes of Bimmerville ran every which way. Rohan held her close as they hurried along the street, drenched in rain that was quickly freezing into ice. Light thunder rolled overhead, the lightning too close. Rohan knew they were on the opposite end of the town from their house, and it was better to find an inn than to ride back in such weather.

Belle was shivering, soaking wet. He had to get her out of the rain.

The words The George Inn caught Rohan’s attention as they ran past a house. He grabbed the doorknob of an ice-coated door and pushed his way inside. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

"Goodness!" A man with lank black hair looked Rohan and Belle up and down, took in their fine expensive clothes, and straightened his shoulders with a big smile on his face.

In a flourish, he offered them the best room in the inn, which he tried to tell them was superb and that even the prince of their land had stayed in that particular room and that they would like it because it came with a room warmer.

Rohan piled a stack of gold coins in the man’s hand and demanded the room immediately, plus a hot bath for his wife. Thunderstorm rocked the house as they hurried up the stairs. The inn had no lamps, and a maid hurriedly lit candles throughout the small bedroom, pinpoints of yellow in the gloom.

Belle stood by the tiny stove that served as a fireplace, rubbing her arms. She shivered too much, Rohan thought in concern, as he noticed how the edges of her hair had begun to coat in ice but were melting because of the fire now.

Rohan curtly reminded the maid about the hot bath, and presently two men came in lugging a large tub. He stripped off his coat while the maid and a younger girl filled the tub with steaming water.

When they all left the room, Rohan turned his wife around and began unbuttoning her sodden coat wordlessly. Belle wiped rain from her face while he pulled off the coat and unhooked her dress corset.

Undressing her was a pleasure, even when he worried about getting her warm. She tried to help him strip off her petticoats, but her fingers were shaking too much, and he cursed under his breath, noticing how her teeth were furiously chattering together.

Rohan went down on one knee to untie her undergarment and slide them down her shivering pale legs. Her stockings came off in clumps, heaps of wet silk on the floor. He ran his hands up her cold legs, over her hips, and up her sides.

As he stood, he cupped his hands around her breasts, then bent his head and kissed her quickly in order to make her warm. Her tongue moved in his mouth, and he circled his thumbs over her nipples, teasing the points to stand.

Rain and ice splashed against the bare window, coating the glass with water and fog. Lightning flashed outside, followed by a boom of thunder that seemed to shake every single thing in the small room.

His wife whimpered at the loud sound.

Rohan lifted her, still kissing her, and carefully lowered her into the steaming bathtub. Belle’s eyes closed in relief as the warm water engulfed her numb, cold body. He stripped off his waistcoat and collar, then his shirt, letting them fall in heaps of wet fabric beside hers.

Belle opened her eyes as he kicked off his boots and stepped out of his trousers. He rubbed his bare skin with a towel the maid had left, then stepped into the end of the tub, sliding his feet on either side of hers. Hot water covered his calves, the bite of its heat soothing away the ice.

Rohan hadn’t liked hot baths as a child, he’d screamed that the water burned his skin, even when it was only mildly warm. Because of his body temperature, he liked to use cold water, but when he cried about the hot water the maids used for him, his father had never believed him and shouted at the guards to forcefully plunge him into the water and be damned.
