Humans who were turned into vampires were the ones always at risk of turning rogue, as their human heart never stopped beating within their body. While being a vampire gave one the ability to live longer than any creature on earth, when the heart still beats, it could not live for that long and instead turned corrupted, making one lose their sanity and become the walking dead. They would kill and attack anyone on sight. They did not bite only to feed on blood but to kill and feed on the flesh of those who fell prey—humans and vampires alike.
Cordelia continued to speak even though Rohan did not comment on the death of the Hathaway family. He was incapable of sympathy, and he would not fake it. He did not feel for them nor the only infant that had survived the attack. The world could burn down to dust and he would feel nothing and walk down their burnt flesh like sand. The last feeling of sympathy he had was many years ago, and he had forgotten what it felt like now.
"His Majesty has put down the laws that no vampire will be allowed to turn any human, but as you already know, it’s still happening underground. We want to keep as many of the humans under our roofs so that when the slaves’ establishment ends up getting closed because of the rogues in the making, we will already have many sired under our roofs to feed our entire generation. Isn’t that a good investment, Cousin Rohan?" she asked, expecting his praise for her father’s brilliant idea, but Rohan merely grunted, sipped his wine, and then said,
"Unfortunately, I do not have time to spare going to a filthy place like the slave establishment when I have much work as the Lord of Nightbrook to catch up on. Send my good luck to Uncle Scott," he remarked tonelessly and turned his attention back to the bunny, who had finished half of the food in front of her and was gulping down water as if to wash down the food. Tsk, everything he had placed in front of her was healthy food that would help her pump up blood so that when he decided to start taking from her, she wouldn’t pass out easily. Humans needed norishing food, and he’d given many to her.
"Cousin Rohan, I heard His Majesty is planning a wedding banquet for you in the palace. Have you heard about it?" Cordelia asked as she elegantly resumed sipping her fresh blood tea, hoping her question would make him stop staring at the human and focus only on her.
Rohan’s hand paused mid-air in bringing his blood wine to his lips and said, "Who sent him to plan a banquet for me?" He snarled in displeasure at the thought of being forced to mingle with annoying people after he had been forced into marriage without completely recovering from the purging in the asylum, where they all believed he was mad, when, to himself, he did not believe it. Whatever he did was with his complete sanity and was something he was completely aware of.
No madman would remember everything with vivid clarity like he did, even after purging. He just did not like crowded places, as they overwhelmed him and made him want to kill everyone around him. They thought he spoke to himself because he was mad, but they were all fucking wrong—including the king, who would now probably force him into attending this damn banquet to test his sanity. His first public event after his release!
Cordelia chuckled softly. "I heard it is for the good of the human so everyone would know her and know that she isn’t a prey for as long as she is in Nightbrook. I thought you were aware."
