Chapter 62: The story behind the letter_Part 1

Rohan did not do more than kiss her, a short kiss, and give her the bite mark. He only moved her aside and laid on her bed with his hands supporting the back of his head on the pillow, his eyes closed, but for some reason she could tell he wasn’t sleeping. His tall, muscled figure stretched on her bed like that made the bed seem much smaller than it was, and she wondered if he planned to spend the night in her chamber tonight.

She stared at him for a while, the heat in her body barely going down even though he wasn’t touching her, and she could still feel the dampness on her petticoat where he had taken into his mouth, and the recollection of it brought a burst of sensation to her already heating body. She had somewhat expected something more than a bite on the neck, and she could not place a hand on her feelings if it were disappointment or relief that he didn’t continue and stopped.

Not knowing what to do, she carefully laid on the other side of the bed facing the ceiling just like he did, but her eyes were wide open. She did not think she would be able to sleep knowing he was on her bed where she could hear his soft breathing and feel his presence like a shadow, his scent clinging in the space and she drew it in with each breath. He was a man whose presence could never go unnoticed or ignored even when he did nothing.

Belle tried to place a finger on her strange feelings and the intense curiosity that had begun to grip her of the carnal knowledge, not just that, but the intense curiosity to know more about the man now sleeping next to her.

Now that he laid here with her, she wondered if she were to take the risk to question him if he would answer her. What if he got up and left like he had a few days ago when she questioned him about his scar? Belle thought, not knowing that he had compelled her to forget, but then it had not worked, something that had never happened before as every human was easy to compel.

Biting the inside of her cheek, she stole a glance at him and saw his serene profile like he was indeed sleeping. Was he really sleeping? She wondered as she pushed herself on one elbow to see his face to know if he was or if he wasn’t asleep. She leaned towards him, but his eyes flew open immediately, startling her into drawing back and laying back on her own pillow at the same time she pulled the sheet over her chest to hide her barely clad body.

He wasn’t sleeping! She screamed in her head as she felt him turn in her direction completely. "What?" came his hoarse, deep voice that questioned her.

Rohan wasn’t sleeping; he hadn’t planned to sleep in her room or anywhere else. He rarely slept, carrying a deep belief that if he dared close his eyes, someone would try to stab him in his sleep. He had let his guard down once—when she was sick—sleeping in another’s presence for the first time.

He only wanted to close his eyes for a moment, to quiet his spinning head, and to make sure she was truly asleep before he left, so there wouldn’t be a repeat of that night when she had gotten sick, mud clinging to her legs. He didn’t know what her nightmare meant, but he wanted to be certain of something while she slept—and to take quiet pleasure in the sound of her heartbeat.

But the bunny had been shifting and peeking at him while her heart kept misbehaving and keeping his mind from relaxing like he planned to do. He liked the beat of her heart as it beat unlike any other and gave him a false sensation that it was coming from within him. But then he could tell she wanted something from him.

Belle, who had pulled the sheet to her nose as if to hide, heard his question and swallowed hard as she didn’t know where to start with her questions. He was a mystery she wanted to uncover, not for any reasons, but because she wanted to. She had told herself that she would never allow her curiosity to get the best of her or push her into getting caught up in her husband’s web, but it seemed she had slowly started getting caught in it.

She didn’t know for how long this marriage would last for and when everything would come to a scattering end and she would be back in Aragonia, but she wanted to take the time she had to understand this man and why he was so feared when he didn’t seem all that bad. She wanted to so much hate him rather than any feelings so it would be easier to turn her back on this life like it had never happened when that time comes, but then...
