She splashed some water on her face to wash off the tear streaks. Her scrubs looked good on her, it made her feel dignified. She was doing good things, she was saving lives. She's not worthless…
If it wasn't for that incident 7 years ago, William Montgomery would be her husband.
Emma Lang felt the familiar sense of panic arise in her body whenever she thought back to that incident. Her hands trembled as she squeezed her eyes shut.
Stop thinking about it Emma. Just stop.
The images of that night flashed across her mind. That night in the rain, a group of men surrounded her in a dark alleyway…
She screamed for help for what seemed like hours, but in the end, the rain drowned out her voice.
The sound of knocking suddenly pulled Emma back from her tormented thoughts. Emma felt relieved something had pulled her from her dark thoughts, she didn't want to go down that rabbit hole again. She took a deep breath and snapped back to her senses.
"Who is inside? Why do you lock the door?”
She hurriedly washed her hands and opened the door.
“What’s wrong with you? It’s a public restroom, not yours!" A patient's mother looked at her with a frowning expression.
Emma lowered her head and quickly walked away.
As soon as she returned to her desk, she saw the last person she wanted to see.
"Emma." Jennifer West stood up and the white gown dragged on the floor. The sunlight outside the window shone on it, making it look very dazzling.
She saw Emma's puffy eyes and hesitated. "Are you alright?"
