Valerie had no idea where Ethan had tossed her phone, leaving her unable to call the police or contact anyone. 

Valerie was disoriented and stumbling, feeling feverish and unsure of her location. She urgently needed to find somewhere to borrow a phone and call Matthew. 

However, this town was remote and sparsely populated, far from the bustling city. Occasionally, early risers would set up stalls, but when they saw Valerie covered in blood and stumbling, none dared to approach her.
