Kailee wasn't paying attention to anything else. She stretched out her arms, trying to wrap them around King's neck for a hug.
Brielle took a sharp breath, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the armrest. What was he planning to do? What did he intend with Max's body?
King raised an eyebrow slightly, a smirk forming on his lips. He shrugged off Kailee, straightened his suit, and then stood up, heading upstairs.
Kailee didn't notice Brielle. Her gaze followed King to the second floor, but Brielle had already retreated into the shadows. Kailee's cheeks flushed as she got up, intending to wrap her arms around King's waist, only to hear him say, "You can go back now."
Kailee paused, feeling as if her soaring spirits had been slapped back to the ground. But she couldn’t give up, not when there had been a hint of progress after all these years. She decided to stay right there, waiting until he came down.
Meanwhile, King had already reached the second floor, standing beside Brielle. He spoke in a low voice, deliberately distinguishing it from Max's tone. "This mansion is under surveillance. I'm not in the habit of putting on a show in front of others, but you can head to the room filled with cameras we used last time. You should be able to see from the footage."
Brielle's breathing became erratic, her anxiety causing her to grasp his hand. "This is Max's body!"
King leaned lazily against the railing, his slender fingers tapping on the cold pillar, his voice light and carefree. "It’s mine too. You resist me, but others don’t. What am I to do? I can only seek other women. Just not sure how Max would feel if he ever comes back. Could he handle it?"
He withdrew his hand, pulling out a lighter, and with a flick of his thumb, a flame burst forth. Brielle knew King was pressuring her. His tactics were always like this, succinct yet precisely calculated to hit where it hurt the most. Her reaction had hurt him, so he conjured up this scene to disgust her.
Downstairs, Kailee was growing impatient, almost wishing she could strip down right there and tie this man to her. She wanted to go up and see what was happening but was held back, urged to keep her cool. Kailee was desperate, feeling this was the closest she had ever been to King, and she couldn’t let this opportunity slip through her fingers.
King’s smile froze, and the hostility within him surged once more. He looked at the face filled with concern before him, but those eyes, looking at him, were actually searching for someone else. If Brielle simply disliked him, he wouldn’t mind. But her love for Max was something he found unbearable.
He turned and pulled the door open. "Maybe I should go to her. At least when she’s in bed with me, she won’t be thinking of someone else."
Brielle’s hands wrapped around his waist, her head resting against his back. "Don't."
"Brielle, don’t you think you’re being selfish?" He looked down at her hands, covering them with his own. "You resist me touching you because, in your eyes, I and Max are two different people. You feel guilty towards him. So, I’ll follow your wishes, treating me and him as separate individuals. Since we are two different people, you have no right to stop me from touching someone else, right?"
He chuckled, gently prying her hands away.
