Jules was doing her best to keep up with King, hanging on his every word and action like he was the most fascinating person on Earth. If King tossed even a tiny bait into the water, she'd be right there, showering him with praise as if he'd just discovered electricity.

“I heard Mr. Haywood was quite a big shot in the welfare world ages ago. You two must have some generational differences, right?”

“It seems her main talent is being book smart, only recently recognized by the Lynch family. Before that, she was just like the rest of us.”

“Have you had enough?” King asked, his voice calm but with a weight in his gaze that made Jules feel like she couldn’t meet his eyes. She shifted uncomfortably.

“What’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?”

King chuckled lightly and tossed his fishing line back out. “Just like the rest of us? Were you always at the top of your class? Did you get into Beaconsfield College as a valedictorian and keep that up? Is that what you mean by 'just like us'?”

Jules's face turned crimson at his question.

“Which school did you graduate from? Let’s see if you’re in the same league.”

Jules hadn’t even finished middle school and had been working since she was young, completely unaware of how tough it was to maintain academic excellence. King’s words were sharp and left her speechless, tears of frustration welling up. Who's to say those top grades weren't the result of cheating?
