Chapter 241: Have A Word With His Human

In the palace, Queen Maeve and her handmaiden were deep in conversation and turned a corner only for her to bump into someone.

"Oh, I’m sorry....." The words trailed from Queen Maeve’s mouth and her expression turned sour when she discovered that it was no one else but her nemesis, Queen consort Nirvana.

As if they made a mutual agreement to ignore each other’s existence, both women attempted to move only to step in each other’s path. After a moment of silent glaring, they attempted to move again only to sidestep in front of each other three more times before finally giving up, deciding to recognize each other’s presence at last.

"Greetings, Queen Consort Maeve, what a surprise to come across your wholesome being," Queen Consort Nirvana said with unbridled sarcasm.

"I would say the same if you weren’t referring to my title wrongly. It’s Fae Queen, Nirvana, not consort, there’s a clear distinction between both, unless, of course, you aren’t as bright as I thought." Queen Maeve said with a snark and a smirk of superiority.

Queen Nirvana’s mouth twitched, however, she didn’t lose her composure easily and replied calmly, "I didn’t realize that there was such a ranking in the King, our husband’s harem, and assumed we were of equal standing. Correct me if I’m wrong, Maeve, but if that’s the case, shouldn’t the oldest wife be the greatest of them all? Doesn’t that mean the queen consort position you hold is a mistake?" She rubbed her chin thoughtfully, "Perhaps, the cabinet should look into this in the next meeting. "

Queen Maeve was the first to lose control, her face darkening as she sensed the threat to her position, "I don’t remember where it is stated in the Fae constitution that the eldest should rule the harem, rather the strongest. So if you are unsatisfied with my position as the Fae Queen of the kingdom of Astaria, why don’t you leave your measly cabinet out of this, and let’s battle it out, one on one?" She snarled.

But Queen Nirvana did not seem so keen to take on Queen Maeve whose hands had lit up with flames on her sides that made her recoil in fear of the heat. The summer court Faeries were strong with their intense element of fire and it was hard to hear of them being defeated by a spring court Fae. The only court able to counter their strength was their rival, the Winter Court. Fire and ice have never mixed well.

Spring court Faeries were scared of the destructive force of fire and it was only strong welders that could achieve such a feat. But even as the queen of the spring court, Nirvana was not confident of defeating Queen Maeve, not without damage to her beautiful face and body. And that was what scared her knowing how vicious Maeve can be in her grabble for power. Not that she wouldn’t heal.

An awkward tension filled the space between them especially after Queen Nirvana realized she just showed weakness by flinching at Queen Maeve’s display of power.

And Fae Queen Maeve sure took advantage of that moment of weakness by closing the distance between them and snarled, "If I were you, I would give up and focus more on my useless being of a son. Shouldn’t he be learning more about ruling his small spring court?"

Queen Nirvana’s hands balled into a fist, fury coursing through her, but the Fae was perfect at controlling her emotions. Her gaze bored into Queen Maeve’s eyes and said with her chin lifted, "Thanks for being concerned about my lovely son, Theodore, Maeve, but isn’t that a misplaced priority? Shouldn’t that level of concern be given to Valerie, who is the crown prince, instead?"

"What?" Queen Maeve narrowed her brows, eyes full of confusion and mistrust.

Maeve would take being insulted anytime, any day, over her son’s position as the crown prince being questioned. Her body became rigid and she clenched her fist hard while fighting the embarrassment in the form of a blush that crawled up her neck. freewebnoveℓ.com
